My DS10 is doing a class project where they pick a state to do a presentation about to kids who come to their "booth". He picked Hawaii. He plans on wearing his Hawaii shirt and serving pineapple to the kids who come to his booth to learn more about the state. Would anyone here be in Hawaii where they could send him a postcard telling him what the temperature was that day, why they like living there, ect.? Anything would be great to put in his booth. Thank you to anyone who thinks they might be able to help!! :goodvibes

I would try posting this on the Disneyland community board- you might get a bite over there since I have seen some Hawaiians on there.

I have been there several times, but not lucky enough to live there :)

Give it some time today, it is mid afternoon or so there right now. They may be getting their snorkel on-oops that would be me if I lived there.

I have a friend that lives in Hawaii.

If you PM me your request, I can send it to her. I cannot guarantee she will do anything...but she just very well might.

Their gingerbread house last Christmas was a surf shack. They are stationed there and loving it. :)

there is a woman on the boards here that lives in Hawaii, mommytotwo, she's very nice, i don't know if she would be up for it but you could PM her to see

My daughter has been living in Honolulu since May. Lately, she has been commenting about the continuous heat. "It's so-o hot!" She is used to Wisconsin' s weather and change of seasons. As I "froze" my fingers with our 19 degrees today, I really can't sympathize with her! I often go to the island's newspaper website for info. Perhaps you could do a printout etc. for the booth. She laughs at their 7 day forecast; it's always been the same -- highs in the low 80's, lows in the 70's!! (sigh) The winds and surf waves report are the big focus. Unfortunately, she does not have a computer to communicate with you. A travel agency (AAA?) has tour books with photos you could use.

Just some additional ideas -- How about AAA for a large road map for the booth? Or a party supply store for decorations --leis, cardboard cutouts, etc. -- tissue paper flowers, music playing in the background (youtube), call the Hawaiian Visitors & Convention Bureau and ask for some printouts sent asap ?

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for the GREAT ideas! :cool1: I will be going today to look at AAA for a large map and the decorations will definately be going up - I didn't even think of that!!! :goodvibes I plan to PM to those who said I could with our address. I always amazes me the kindness of strangers on this website.:) Thanks again.

That is so funny! We aren't as cold as Wisconsin here just yet, but it has been about 25 degrees and windy, with lows of 9 now at night. Those temps sounds just heavenly to me!!:cloud9: Try to stay warm up there!:goodvibes

I'm in Hawaii. PM me your info and I'll put a few postcards in the mail.

Hey, we do get a little variation in the weather. We have a cold front passing through right now. Low this morning was 63 degrees at drive-time but it warmed up to the low 80's by lunch.

I agree that the surf report is more important than the weather report. That's because the surf changes from day-to-day and from season-to-season. Here's a link: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/SRF.php It's winter so the north shore has the big waves. In the summer, the south shore has the bigger waves.

Hawaii has two official languages, English and Hawaiian. Most kamaaina (locals) know at least a handful of words. So another suggestion would be to put a few Hawaiian words in the booth - aloha - hello, mahalo - thank you, the state fish is the humuhumunukunukuapuaa and of course, the state motto - ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono - the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.

And if I remember correctly, the Hawaiian alphabet contains only 12 letters and all the letters are pronounced, so reading it isn't really as hard as it first seems. Of course, for us haoles is doesn't quite roll of the tongue as easily. LOL!!

Here is a pretty good site with lots of words and phrases. Of course, there are others as well.

Thank you for this site! I can't wait to show my DS when he gets home from school. We were trying to pronounce the State Fish this AM - and it was so hard! LOL!! Your reply and help is appreciated! :goodvibes

State fish broken down - humu humu nuku nuku apu a a. The key is to pronounce every letter.

I got your PM.

Here's an example of the surf in the news from today's Honolulu StarAdvertiser: http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/111540814.html

Waves with 18- to 22-foot faces are expected on north shores today as waves generated by a storm in the Aleutians arrive in Hawaii.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for north and east facing shores until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Surf with eight-foot faces is predicted today for east shores.

The surf is expected to build through the morning and peak this afternoon. The first rounds of the Billabong Pipe Masters in memory of Andy Irons contest, part of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, is being held this morning at the Backdoor and Pipeline surf breaks on Oahu's North Shore.

Waves are reported to be in the six- to eight-foot range by local measurements, with higher sets.

A high surf advisory means that waves along affected shores will be higher than normal. Inexperienced beach-goers are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shore break.

Learned about this fish from High School Musical 2, LOL. This was a scene cut from HSM2, and was on the DVD. It was a scene with Sharpay and Ryan and various extras. My daughter was in a local stage production of HSM2 and they put this in the play. It was one of the funniest things in the show! I still occasionally have that song in my head. :)

Thanks everyone for your replys, help, info and PM's! My DS is having so much for with this project!:goodvibes
