I'm shopping around for moderately priced top loading washer and dryer. Wondering if any of you happen to have a Maytag Centennial set. If so, how do you like it?

I guess no one owns that model!

I'll chime in on reliability. I had done my homework 7 years ago when we built & decided to ignore the Consumer Reports report that Maytag had high repairs. I got a set of Maytag (high end) and in 7 years the washer has been serviced twice, and the dryer once. So not the best service record, but I do love the machines.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, sorry! Just check Consumer Reports on that model to see the maintenance report.

I don't have that model but have a two-year-old Maytag dryer. It's easily the worst I've ever owned. It's not that it needs repairs -- it's that it's NEVER worked well. Towels ALWAYS need two cycles as does virtually any full load.

I had a Maytag washer for six or seven years ago and wasn't in love with it either, but it did do better than this crappy dryer.

That's OK; I was looking for honest replies. I don't subscribe to Consumer Reports, but I'm thinking that the $30 subscription may be well worth it if it helps me choose reliable appliances. I'll also be looking to replace my dishwasher one of these days. Thanks for your reply!

That's what I'm hoping to avoid - buying a set that I wind up being unhappy with. Maybe I should go ahead and subscribe to Consumer Reports...
Thanks for your reply!

I've been shopping for a new washer and dryer too. I wanted a top loading washer and was having a hard time finding any with good reviews.

I finally settled on a GE Adora washer and dryer. The washer had lots of good reviews on Home Depot's website. The dryer only has one review, but it was positive. I can't tell you anything about them yet though. They won't be delivered until next week.

My existing washer and dryer are 18 yr old Maytags. I don't think any appliances (regardless of brand) last that long anymore.

I noticed that you mentioned dishwashers too. We bought a Bosch a couple of years ago and I LOVE it! It's very quiet and cleans very well. We've had no issues at all with it so far and I run it at least once a day.

Hey, thanks, Julie! I appreciate this information. I'm interested that you are getting a GE Adora set. I've looked at those kind of closely too. I think I'll take another look when I go back out to look this evening.

Thanks also for the mention of your Bosch dishwasher. That's not a brand I'm very familiar with, so it's good to know that you love yours. I'll watch for that brand when I start seriously shopping for one.

I know what you mean that appliances don't last like they used to. The set I'm replacing are old Whirlpools. I've had them 19 years, and they were about 6 years used when a friend gave them to me then. She was redoing her house and decided to buy a new set right around the time I was buying my first house. She was thrilled to give her "old" set to me as a housewarming gift, and I was thrilled to get them. I never dreamed they'd last this long, but they just kept going and going. Only one part replaced on the dryer; otherwise no repairs. But now they are both showing their age and are probably on their last legs. I certainly can't complain that I didn't get enough use out of them! :lmao:

Had to circle back and tell you that I wound up buying a GE Adora set too. :) I shopped around, subscribed to Consumer Reports and did some homework there, and read the reviews on Home Depot. The GE Adora set seemed like the best choice for me, and I was pretty pleased with the price too. They'll be delivered on Friday. I'll be SO glad, since my old washer is kind of limping along.

I hope they're good. Mine are being delivered on Thursday, which is perfect as my washer only washes on the delicate cycle and my dryer has to run through twice to dry a load. I can't wait!

Sounds like we're in the same boat. I have to either stand by the washer and constantly pull on the dial to keep a wash cycle going, or wedge a pair of scissors behind the dial to keep it going. :rotfl: The dryer does work if I run it and run it.

Yup, definitely time for a new set. At least I won't feel guilty about junking the old set too soon. ;)

travelbug, the plumber hooked up my washer and dryer today and so far I really like them. I've done a few loads already and everything seems very clean and everything dried nicely as well.

These machines are definitely fancier than my old ones. Lots of choices/selections. I hope you enjoy yours! :goodvibes
