I am thinking of taking an Acting class. Someone said, "life is a play and success is given to the best actors". I think learning about acting in a formal way will improve my self confidence, loosen my body and voice, and unlease my creative side.

Has anyone taken acting classes, or been an actor at one time in their life? How did you like it?

I love it. There's nothing like it. Being on stage in front of theatre full of strangers is an amazing feeling. Plus, I think it's made me a better teacher.

I like it as well. LOVE it better when I get cast in something. ;).

I have never done a class--but my daughter has..it is a great confidence booster and you learn to trust yourself and not take yourself so seriously.

ENJOY! It is a very exhilerating craft.

Depending on the instructor, class, etc., it will provide all of those things. Of course, you will have to be prepared to take a lot of criticism and be prepard to having people telling you what to do but always in order to help you.

Chances are that you will love it and discover new abilities. It would be great just for helping you to be more at ease with yourself, and you may even decide to audition for local stage productions.

Speakers groups such as Toastmasters International may be good also. (I've never attended but have friends who do)

I did many plays in HS, one in college, and one since college. I really enjoyed it and see that the kids in my school enjoy it too (although it isn't as "accepted" where I work as it is where I live--where I live the arts are much more respected). I think it has helped me a great deal in standing in front of a hundred kids every day. It also helps me look calm when I am ready to strangle my teenager.
There was a teacher in my building who was very active in Toastmasters and really enjoyed it.

I took Second City improv classes for a couple years - it was one of the best experiences of my life!

Good acting classes are a blast and do all of the things you mentioned. There are many different ways to teach acting, however, so you might want to do a bit of research to find a class where you feel most comfortable. Some instructors really push an intense emotional investment (The Method, derived from Stanislavsky...think Marlon Brando in Streetcar), which I personally find uncomfortable. I taught acting last year and concentrated more on basic improvisation, voice, and movement. As well as helping you find a public voice, acting exercises are great for sharpening intuition, instinct, and analytical thinking. I say give it a shot!

If you're serious about it, join the Actors Center. It's only about $50 a year and you get all their seminars for nothing extra. Plus it's a great way to network with fellow enthusiasts, learning which teachers to avoid (like the plague!) and which teachers' classes always sell out. Studio Theatre's classes are supposed to be good, but can be intense. Little Theatre of Alexandria has some classes(reasonably priced, too), that might be a good way to get your feet wet. Lots of the community theatres and many of the professional theaters have some kind of training/classes/seminars. Gary Wheeler teaches along with John Strawbridge and someone else - his seminars are highly-recommended ....really, there's a *lot* of acting classes(most are good) in the DC area.

tone.def - Oooooooooo, Second City Improv classes...sweeeeeeeeeeet.

Break a leg,
agnes!
(and yes, I am an actor)
