I just saw 2 way (cobra) radios at BJ's with a 5 mile range. I was wondering if anyone has used these? They have 15 channels and 38 subcodes. They are advertised as professional radios not family. I was wondering if anybody knows if they are any better than the 2 mile ones? I would like to be able to reach MK from the CR.

i have a pair.

Much as the regular '2 mile' claim is exaggerating so is the '5 mile' claim on these.

I do have a pair of the '2 mile' type and the 5 mile ones do transmit further, but no where near 5 miles.

I think 5 miles (or even 2) for that matter only happens if you are standing on a mountain and the recieving party is in the valley below and the weather is perfect- ;)

Also they are not family radios- but as you said gmrs professional readios so you are technically supposed to get a permit from the fcc to use them.

If you are going to buy them- check out amazon.com I found them there cheaper than anyplace else and amazon had a $30 rebate also.

Thank you for all your information. Do you think they are worth the extra money. We have a 13 year old daughter that I would like to give a little more freedom to on our next trip but I don't want to be out of touch. We also have a 3 year old that still takes naps and was hoping one of us could stay with him in one location and still keep in contact within the same park. Do you think the 2 mile one would be ok for this or would we be better off with the 5.

ebhurleys We used the 2 miles one at all the parks.. and we loved them... my 16 year old and his friends had one... while each couple of adults had one... we would let the boys know that we were going to go to another park... and to see if anyone wanted to go with us...most the times the boys stay at the park .. and we would let them know to turn them on in about 3 or 4 hours and would be able to find them when we came back...
and sure enough they worked.. we were always able to find them the only time you cant call them is when they are in side a ride...

Hi!

We had the "5 mile" radios on our last Disney trip and on a ski trip. While other people with 1-2 mile radios were having trouble getting a signal, we were getting our messages through with no problem. That is, until I put one of them in my back pocket and started climbing through a playground in IOA and suddenly realized it wasn't there. The staff helped us look for it for over an hour. No such luck! The moral of that story? Keep it in your front pocket!!!:D
