Anyone have simulator ride tips (i.e., for Star Tours)?

Neither DH nor I typcially like simulator rides (,) but we'll definitely be riding Star Tours.

I doubt we'll want to take anything like dramamine, but are there any tips to make it as least nauseating as possible? I guess you're supposed to always focus straight ahead . . . anything else?

Just look away from the screen if youre feeling ill. It'll still be bumpy but youll lose the sensation of "flying".

Also, in Star Tours sit in the front; it tends to be less jostling

I have been told that Ginger-Ale is very helpful. I plan to try it in Nov. Good luck.

I close my eyes. This way I can ride the ride and hear what's going on. I tried it on Star Tours years ago and was fine, and it's the only way I can handle Soarin'.

Also, on Soarin, just focus off screen for a bit at the black around the screen if you start to feel queesy

Has anyone tried Ginger pills? I've read (and seen on Mythbusters) where some get motion sickness relief from ginger root and I'm considering giving that a try (instead of taking dramamine which makes me sleepy).

Thanks for the tip. I just worry that if I look away and then look back, that's what will make me feel sick because trying to get back into the scene will be disorienting.

Ginger is probably a good idea. I know with morning sickness, gingerale helped me, so it does make sense. I just read somewhere online to take a ginger pill with protein (like a protein shake) -- that also makes sense for me because protein usually made me feel less sick during pregnancy, too. I'd like to find the "ginger candy" somewhere -- that way my kids could have it, too, just in case -- don't know what their tolerance would be on this kind of ride. Also, Soarin' and/or coasters don't bother me at all, but simulators and spinning (e.g., tea cups) =.

I can ride coasters all day long but not simulators or even the teacups. As others have mentioned - ginger works, but dont rule of dramamine (non-drowsy). Also I find that chewing gum helps for me and if all else fails close your eyes and/or look away from the screen. I have been able to do Star Tours using this tricks after a not-so-pleasant experience on it where I turned a lovely shade of GREEN:sick:

I've done well on other rides with Sea Bands. They're tight bracelets with little bumpy things that push on a spot on your wrists. I've also used MotionEaze with some success - it's a mix of essential oils that you put behind your ear. I don't use it often because my husband doesn't like the smell of it (I like it, though - lavender, peppermint, chamomile and a few others)

Thanks for the advice MM. I have heard astronauts suggest mints or gum to fight off the effects of motion sickness, so I'll probably try that as well. But I'll also look for non-drowsy dramamine in case the ginger pills don't work.

Spinning things like the teacups are definitely out for me, but I would like to at least try the visual effects/motion simulators such as Star Tours, Soarin', Mission Space, etc.

Unfortunately, I have the most problem with motion sensitivity for a couple of days after flying (and we're flying to WDW). It must be a pressure change/inner-ear thing...

Chewing gum -- brilliant! I can actually see how that would help. Looks like we'll be in WDW at the same time -- maybe we can be sick on Star Tours together. :rotfl:

My parents tried those when they were on a cruise. Didn't do much for them and I thought they tasted awful. I was told to suck on ice chips when I was getting sick on the ocean. Seemed to work but not sure about sucking ice while on an attraction :)

Put a mint candy in your mouth to suck on while you watch. Also, don't look around and keep your eyes on the movie screen.

these will be very helpful for my parents and sister! they are bad on simulators but want to ride star tours as well.

I've tried ginger chews(kind of a ginger taffy). I found that they help settle my stomach, which is helpful, but don't do anything for the headache motion sick feeling.

I tried ginger pills once and one issue was they kept "revisiting" me all day (lots of ginger burps). Wasn't keen on it.

The one recommendation I have re: the non-drowsy bonine is that it does make some of us drowsy. Since they (in theory) last all day, I recommend taking one right before bedtime the night before - that's what I did on my last trip and I actually rode the tea cups w/o getting sick. This was a real feat for me, since I can get queasy just riding a regular swing in a playground!!

Thanks for the tip on Bonine gumbo1009. I'll give it a try.

Bonine is the BEST. I'm pretty sensitive to simulators and always take a Bonine before I hit the parks anyways.

They never make me drowsy and I'm set for the day!
