We just realized our deductible with Alfa has gone to 1% instead of $500, without notice. We have been searching new companies and Travelers through Tom Jones Insurance is the best quote, but can't seem to find anything positive about this company. Anyone have experience with them or any other suggestions for insurance companies?
Thanks!

I do not have experience with the companies you mentioned, but I did do extensive research for our policies (renewal) back in May of this year to see if we were still in the ballpark with respect to our premiums. I researched Progressive, USAA and a few others (Geico, State Farm, AAA, Travellers) that came in way higher than what I was currently paying. My findings were that Progressive and USAA were nearly identical to each other for coverages and premiums, but more than I was paying with my current carrier (with higher coverage). The Insurance company I am with is GMAC for auto and home. The name of their division for homeowners insurance is Homesite. So, for our insurance needs, we stayed with GMAC. If I were to rank insurance companies based on my needs as of May 2010, for identical coverages it would be:

1. GMAC
2. USAA
3. Progressive

All the other companies I looked into were charging a lot more for homeowners and auto. If you have a GM car, GMAC mortgage, Onstar, KOA, Good Sam, etc. you get deductions from your premiums, multi line for home and auto, etc.

Travelers is an A rated company. I work for an insurance agency that uses Travelers. They have great claim service which is important as that is what you are really paying insurance for. I would not hesitate to use them. I did use them myself until I got a better rate somewhere else.

I work for an insurance agency that represents Travelers. They are a very reputable company and I wouldn't hesitate to have my insurance with them.

Travelers is one of the oldest insurance companies in America. They have never done much advertising, instead working through agents, which is why they may not be as well known. They are financially stable :thumbsup2

We have Travelers for our home and cars. All claims have been paid very fast. We lost our son in a car accident, he was driving, have been hit a few times, and never had any problems. Nice to work with.

I am so sorry for your loss:grouphug:

Thank you all so much for the information! It really does help us...this is so frustrating trying to compare apples to apples on everything!
Thanks again!!

We have all of our auto/home policies with Travelers (we purchased thru AAA)...we have two homeowners policies (two houses), three cars and an umbrella policy.

We have had them for 12 years, and have had two claims: I got rearended at a traffic light (the guy who hit me also had his policy thru Travelers). I had a check about 3 days later with no issue whatsoever. Then last Dec, a tree on our property fell and totaled my neighbors car during a windstorm, and did a bunch of damage to our house as well. :headache: They came out two days later and cut a check for us while they were here, enough to fix the electrical service to my house, fix the shingles, my fence, my roof and have the rest of the tree removed. And they dealt with my neighbor as well (we weren't actually liable for his damage, but that's a whole 'nother story).

We are very satisfied. Oh, and our premiums did not go up a lot nor were we dropped after these things.

We have been with most of the companies mentioned here and I’ve found that rates usually vary because the coverages are different. It’s important to read the fine print, the additional benefits offered within the same amount, the discounts etc. Have been with AARP insurance (through The Hartford) ever since we became members 3 years ago, and not had any problem so far.

So your deductible is 1% of your total loss claimed? Did this change affect your premium up or down?

If it is indeed a straight % of the loss, then having a deductible at 1% of the loss isn't the end of the world. That means for your deductible to be $500 (what you planned on having) your loss would need to be $50,000.

What is the average claim? If you have a loss that is only $15,000 then your deductible (at 1%) seems like it would be only $150. That's not so terrible, in my mind.

I've had Travelers since I've been driving 15 years now. For some reason other people enjoyed hitting my truck. Every claim I put in for was meant with quick response. Usaully within 24 hours I had a rep at my door to evaluate the claim. I too looked into other co. for cheaper reates to help with the budget, but I really wasn't going to save much more. With that being said I know what I have with Travelers why jepordize what we have now with possibly lesser customer service.

We have travelers and although we've never had to make a large claim (thank goodness) we did have a freezer go out this past June while we were are WDW. I called right away once we got home and had a check about 3 days later, customer service is A++++++ the claims agent we were assigned to was actually getting ready to go on vacation for 2 weeks so she worked overtime to get our claim finalized prior to leaving for vacation so we wouldn't have to wait until she got back.

We have Travelers Insurance through AAA for our home owners policy and have only had to file a claim once but they were quick and easy to deal with.
