My partner Lisa has been recommended, by her physician, to the local hospital's weight loss clinic. They use the Optifast system. This is a pretty intense program using liquid meal replacements for the first 6 weeks. We are still not sure that Lisa could even do this program as she is diabetic, but I am struggling with the no solid food for 6 weeks aspect of the program. I was wondering if anyone here has been through it and what your experiences were.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Linda, I worked with a girl that used this about 20 years ago. She lost a ton of weight and I don't think ate real food for six months. She chewed a lot of gum to get the feeling of eating something in her head. I have no idea if she kept it off forever but for the time I knew her she did keep it off.

Honestly, I was doing WW at the same time as her (one of my early tries at it) and I lost almost the same amount of weight in the same time period and I ate. Granted I did not keep it off that time (I'm hoping I'm older and wiser now) but I don't know if she did either.

If your friend has other medical issues, I really worry about doing this type of diet and get a 2nd opinion but that is me.

Mary Ann,

Thanks for the reply. My feeling is this...that not eating food, for any length of time cannot be good for your system. Her physician recommended it and the local clinic is in a hospital, but still I am skeptical.

We are looking into several other programs as well as this one.
