I finally have come to the realization (with some help from my friends and husband) that we need some additional help in the home with our kids. We own a business which takes up most of my husbands time and he will soon be oit of the house from 8-8 every day due to the holiday rush, and I work 4 days a week with my career.

Anyways, have any of you gone through the process of hiring a nanny? We are looking for someone just part time after school to get through the evening routine a little smoother. What do you suggest as far as posting an ad, interviewing, etc?

Thanks in advance!

If you're anywhere near a college town, I'd look through the college. That's usually a really good place to find reliable people with flexible schedules.

When i got my job(i did a part time job from picking the kids up from school till around 8 pm every day..) it was because i worked at the day care center these kids went..you could check day cares..or colleges, like someone else said..i know at my college there is a book we can go look through to find jobs

I hired three nannys when my girls were younger. I went through an agency for all of them. You paid a finders type fee and they sent names and resumes. If you go this route, my advice is to interview a lot until you find the right one. The agency would send three names at a time and we would ask for more until we found just the right person.

Thanks for your responses so far! Right after I posted here I went online to look at the local university's classifieds and there were 7 people looking for babysitting/nanny type jobs. I hadn't expected to be able to get into the universoty classifieds cause when I was there for grad school they kept it locked for just students and staff, so that was a nice surprise. I am also going to look into agencies as well.

Keep those responses coming! What types of things did you require for employment? I saw some ads listing drug screening as a requirement. How do I go about enforcing that?

I was a Nanny for 4 families. I got my jobs differnet ways, 2 word of mouth, one agency and one though an ad. Personally I didn't think the agency screened the family well enough. I don't even think they actually called my references either. I would make sure you doubt check everything.

Any more questions just ask.
