anyone have direct tv???

We got DirectTV 3 years ago after that last cable increase that most certainly did not correlate with the level of service and offerings they gave and DH in his Popeye mode had all he could stand and wouldn't stand no more, so we went with Direct....

We have lost the signal a handful of times because of the weather - but be weary of trees! We had ours installed in December (great sale from Circuit City) and we were happy that we had a clear shot to the satellite - we knew it was going to be close....then, spring came....and we quickly noticed the installer did not allow for leaves and those leaves swaying in the wind........ remedy was a costly one - the extension pole wasn't too bad - it was the cherry picker needed to cut down the branch of the neighbor's tree that got just a tad expensive............DH still says it was money well spent - esp. during basketball season - and football season - and baseball season.....lol

My girlfriend's family has a DirecTV and it goes out when it rains, and I don't just mean heavy rain. I doesn't go out every time it rains, but they'll lose service for a minute or two if there's a steady rain. To me, it's not worth it. I have digital and it's awesome.

We've had Directv since 1996 and love it. Yes, we do lose the signal once in awhile during a storm - usually for less than 10 minutes a few times a year. How many times does the cable go out during bad weather? All the time!! And then you're at the mercy of the cable company to go out and fix the problem. With Directv, the signal comes right back all by itself as soon as the heaviest part of the storm passes. We never have outages for regular rain or snow, just really heavy downpours. We do use the cable company for our cable modem. We had tried Direcpc a few years ago and it wasn't very good. I think they've done some work to improve it, but I'm happy with what we have right now.

We've had DirecTV for a few years now and haven't had any problems with it. My DH is more of a TV watcher than I am, and he is pleased.

On occasion, if we have a really wild storm it'll go out for a few minutes, but it's never been more than a few minutes, and it comes back quickly. My in-laws used to have the same problem with cable if there was funky weather, but cable always took a lot longer to come back on.

I have no complaints.

I bought the first dish in '95...DH wasn't going to move on top of my mountain with me without it. Somehow, I lasted 4 years up there with only PBS, the local NBC affiliate and a holy roller channel just fine. Take Nascar away from him and he's a crazy man, lol! I lived 3 miles out of my tiny town of 2,000 and cable just didn't come out that far.

We've got the whole enchilada for a sports nut. We don't need all those sports channels, because all he cares about is motorsports, but that's okay. We also were able to add the local channels and family pack. I think our bill is 80 a month, but Adelphia doesn't carry my few addictions (food network and all those discovery channels), so I don't complain.

We moved into a new house in '99 and he put it smack dab in front of the house....it worked great for a while...then our tree grew, and we moved it right next to the front stoop. This makes it nice when it snows, I only have to reach the broom out to clean it off.

Our HOA sent out landscapers the spring after we moved in to remulch all the houses on our block and the stupid guys slammed a rake into the LNB on the dish...we couldn't understand why we had no signal. DH decided he'd get cable and when he called to cancel, DirectTV gave us a 250 credit to go get a new dish, so he got the top of the line Sony unit. It was only after he took the old one off that he realized the LNB was cracked. Their customer service really goes above and beyond. Lesson learned: put it on a higher pole.

When we move, I am tempted to put it on the roof of the next house, as I won't have to worry about snow where we're going!

We have direct TV with Tivo and Ultimate TV (which rocks, but is being phased out)

Here is Chicago, it works well, maybe 5 times it has gone off in the 2+ years we have had it, and only for a few minutes.

I have had Directv, digital cable and now currently Dish network. I am one of those people that will switch if the right deal is offered.

I liked Directv for the NFL package they have otherwise I had problems with customer service. Twice they billed me for PPV movies we did not rent (they were Adult movies) and other billing problems. But I would switch back.

Our local cable company Mediacom, I use for the cable modem but I feal they are very expensive and will not go to digital cable thru them.

Dish Network I have had for 5 months and have had problems with their recievers, I have been shipped new recievers twice. They are quick to fix the problem but it does take a week to get the new reciever. I do like the 501 PVR reciever, pausing and rewinding live TV is great.

I feel that all of the companies offer the same channels and it is very easy to switch among them. You can get free installion and the first couple of months free with a movie channel thrown in. Other than Dish Network that may require a contract the others usually don't. So when one company upsets tell them that you are switching they may offer a better deal.

Long story, but an important message--be very careful about who you order it through. DirecTV apparently has a bunch of outside telemarketers selling it for them, and unfortunately, these outside companies aren't very honest or dedicated to customer service.

I'd say order it directly through DirecTV or go through a store like Radio Shack or Sears.

Do not deal with a telemarketer who leaves a message on your answering machine--no matter how much better their deal sounds. (Word to the wise!)

Why bother going "through" someone at all? Just pick it up at the local Circuit City. They often run deals that make all of the equipment free after rebate or sometimes $99 installed. They are relatively simple to install yourself unless you need to put it on your roof. We've done ours at 2 different homes by ourselves. No problem at all, if you don't mind spending a little time getting it done.
