Anyone have any ideas on how to do Hawaii on a strict budget?

The Hale Koa really frowns upon visitors who are not authorized using their facilities. We stayed for two weeks last year in Oahu and visited the Hale Koa for dinner. Unfortunately they did turn people away who were not with a guest. Since your mother is staying at the hotel you should not have any problem enjoying all that this resort has to offer. Have a great trip.

That's true. Guests like immediate family members are welcome, though. Here are their official policies: http://halekoa.com/elig.htm

I've only been to the HK when my credit union there has a banquet dinner. :)

Thank you Lisa loves Pooh for the family friendly info. Going to go get a book this weekend : )

I am wondering if anyone has any idea when the flight sales start for a Sept or Oct trip and what is reasonable to pay? I would be flying from Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, or San Francisco to Oahu and then a round trip or circle flight to Maui? Flights right now are $600 each and that is crazy!

They have lots of sales right now for flights until this June.

Jenn

If I could have found $600, I'd have been thrilled! :sunny: My flights, since they were booked around Christmas time have just about doubled in price now. These are for June flight, but I can't imagine nearly $2000. I thought my about $1000 tickets were bad.

Jenn: I was researching around September for my trip in Feb. and at one point I saw some flights (we live in same area) for October REAL cheap, like in the high 200's!!!! so, you will need to wait and just keep checking. Yep, I see summer prices are like $614! I am sure you have tried many websites, but also check out airtohawaii.com
airtohawaii
good luck!

Very weird thing--we noticed for the last two summers that after my sisters birthday in July--(like mid-july) that airfare prices drop after climbing slowly for several months. :teeth:

This was for us on NWA flying out of Orlando. We bought at that time 2 years ago--and in pricing for this fall...I studied the trends last summer as well. We ended up using our skymiles so did not have to wait until this summer.

From Orlando, they were the least expensive of all the airlines.

Not sure this will help you--but if everything looks astronomical, you might consider waiting until then.

HOWEVER--if you are a planner and cannot wait that long--for research purposes....look into it and see if the prices dropped since your purchase.

Can someone give us an idea of what groceries might cost us if we get a kitchenette? I figured we could do pop tarts for breakfast, PB&J for lunch and then go out for dinner on the main island. What does a box of pop tarts cost? I know that seems kinda silly but that would give me and idea of how much to up costs on the normal groceries we would buy in a weeks vacation. What have you spent for food, gas, tours, anything above and beyond hotel/airfare? I was hoping $1500 for a family of 3 for a week if we eat in breakfast and pack a lunch. Maybe do 1 tour but mostly drive ourselves around and see the area and beachse. We have our own snorkel equipment that we could bring. But maybe I am way too low? Thanks!
A box of pop tarts (either 3 bags of 2 per box or 4 bags of 2 per box so 6 or 8 I forget) is $2.50 on sale at K-mart. If you go to wal-mart and get the generic brand it will run you about $2. Sams club or costco might be worth a trip. There is a wal-mart and sam's club located right near Ala Moana shopping mall (probably a 10 minute drive from waikiki, actually shorter but maybe traffic and I rather estimate a little high than low). Milk at wal-mart is about $3.80 a gallon and that is a decent price for milk, might be slightly less at sam's club. 18 eggs at san's club is about $2. I think your $1500 a week budget is good. That's about $200/day and about $60/meal but usually breakfast and lunch runs cheaper. A GREAT breakfast place is Koa Pancake house. There is one in Aiea (if going to Pearl Harbor you might wanna stop there for a hearty breakfast that should hold you over til lunch without having to snack). I LOVE going there for breakfast. It gets quite crowded on the weekends as this is a place that many locals like to frequent (good food, big portions and reasonable prices). PB & J for lunch would work out but I think you might get sick of that so if you do maybe you could pack a cooler and leave it in the car with squeezable mayo (if you like the stuff) and cold cuts. One tip, please do not leave anything of value in your car. I hear stories about breaking into cars at touristy locations (they also happen a lot at the wal-mart in my town). DDs crying, gotta go

Get a Safeway card and a Foodland card (Makai card) for discounts on groceries. You can fill out the Safeway card on line and hand it in at the courtesy desk.

I just read that a new interisland airline is coming in. If you travel sometime in June and book your interisland fare now before April something the price is like $40 one way. Usually it's about $100. This is for Aloha and Hawaiian...I hear. Worth checking out their websites.

You'll love our Aloha state. :sunny: :cheer2: :cheer2: :sunny: :sunny:

I haven't been to Kauai in about 9 years or so :guilty:
but I do have a friend who grew up there. Let me ask her and I will get back to you. But...I probably won't be able to write abot kauai until after April 6th since I will be leaving for my San Diego/Disneyland trip on Monday. But I will be back. DawnCt1's advice about the safeway card or Maikai card is a good one. Some supermarkets in Hawii require the use of a supermarket card to get the sale prices. Some cashiers have an "extra" card at checkout that they will scan in case you *forgot* yours. But Kauai does have a Wal-mart for sure....Sam's club or costco? I will ask my friend. There is this place I want to try the next time I go there. Puka dog, it's like a corn dog or like a hot dog (try google it, they do have a website). But the owner makes their relishes and uses locally grown fruits for a local flavor. I will ask my friend about the good cheap places to eat though.

Thanks for the info on Kuaui, DawnCt1 & kjh. We leave 4/7/06 (early morning) & I was wondering about Walmart/costco, sma's etc. So, it sounds like I should definitely bring my Safeway card. (we'll be staying at the Kapaa Shore condos) I'll google puka dog--my teens might just love that. I'll miss your update after 4/6, but hope you have a great time in DL!! Any more tips on Kuaui?? less than 2 weeks & counting...not looking forward to the 10 hour flight tho :rolleyes1 Deb

I forgot about this place:

Saint-Germain Bakery

2301 Kuhio Avenue Suite 117A
Honolulu, HI 96815

They have reasonably priced baked goods ($1-$2 for pastries and muffins) and good sandwiches ($2.95-$4.50). We stopped there twice and had a nice picnic with their food. The sandwiches range from egg and tuna salad to ham, turkey pastrami and roast beef. You can pick your bread (or even a french bagette) and lots of veggies and other extras. We stopped at the ABC store nearby for drinks (single cans of beer and Japanese iced green tea). There is a Starbucks across the street.

There has been major flooding on Kauai. Please read the local newspaper online sites before you go as it may affect your plans there and what is accessible/etc:

We're going to Hawaii June 2-18, 5 nights each on Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. On Kauai and Maui we're staying in condos with kitchens so we can reduce our eating costs considerably. However, our last 5 nights on Oahu are hotel room only, no kitchen. However, you can't beat the price--free! We're staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village using our Hilton Honors points. Actually, we're staying 4.5 nights. Our plane leaves at 10 pm, so we're choosing to stay late/check out early the 5th night (leave about 7 pm) to have the use of the hotel room until then.

I'm somewhat concerned about keeping food costs down, especially while on Oahu. HHV is very expensive to eat at. We've eaten at the Rainbow Lanai (get there before 5 pm, reduced prices, plus first pick of the buffet!), however, that would be an expensive dinner every night. We will have a rent car, any suggestions for good eateries nearby? Of course, I do plan to have some food items in the room, using the tricks I've learned from Disboards and my Disney trips, I've become rather good at feeding us in a hotel room! I believe we can get a small fridge, otherwise, just buy a cheap stryofoam ice box, breakfast things like cereal, bagels, cream cheese, fruit, juice, sandwich fixings, late -night snacks like breakfast bars, chips, etc. plus, of course, bottled water. We won't starve! Also, last trip to Hawaii, we rented a minivan and packed a cooler with bottled water and snacks to avoid paying through the nose every time we wanted a snack (you're not in the hotel every time you're hungry!).

Well, any advice about inexpensive eateries near Hilton Hawaiian Village? I understand there's restaurants like Dennys, IHop, etc., are they near HHV? I've had some people (who honestly don't know any better) shoot down my ideas to keep food costs down--"who wants to go to Hawaii to eat in a Dennys? who wants to sit in a hotel room and eat peanut butter sandwiches?" These remarks are from people who have no idea of how high food bills can run in touristy areas-- "Who wants to spend $300+ per day just to eat?" Got to cut costs somewhere. We usually have one nice meal a day out somewhere, for the ambience as well as the food. Its just that you don't want to run out to eat every time you put food in your mouth. That could double the price of your trip!

So, advice about eating cheaply in Waikiki, near Hilton Hawaiian Village? Thanks!

I second the idea about the Safeway card. Actually, my Randalls card was accepted at Safeway, otherwise, it takes about 5 minutes to fill out an application for one there. We used it at the Safeway in Lahaina (Maui) and saved $40 in one trip! We estimated the card saved us about $100 total! Well worth the effort!

I hear you! We are going in July with our two teens and will be staying at the Hale Koa. We used to live there, so for us it is all about revisiting our favorite spots. We plan to go to Ala Moana Mall several times and eat at their food court. It is huge, close by with a car and has a lot of local foods. This way everyone can get what they want. There a lot of small corner places in Waikiki that have really cheap plate lunches (rice, meat and macaroni) and most are really good. We plan to eat a few lunches at Dukes on the beach. Not cheap but something our whole family would like. Also, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village there is a Round Table Pizza that is reasonably priced, just don't do room service. We plan to visit several little places that we used to go to up in Millilani and Pearl Ridge that are hole in the wall type places but oh so good! Sorry, I can't give you names because I only know the locations and not names.... If you stay away from the big restaurants you can eat reasonably on Oahu....

Hawaiianair.com is for hawaiian airlines. I prefer them but they have much more limited interisland flights (I just booked my oahu to kona flight at $78 round trip, plus taxes and what not but still a DEAL!)
alohaairlines.com is for aloha airlines. they had more available flights at $39 one way. most of my miles are on hawaiian and lately hawaiian has been more "on time" than aloha from what I've read.
islandair.com is for island air. They are affiliated aith aloha I think. Before aloha and hawaiian went to $39 one way specials they were the cheapest for me. But their planes look smaller (just based on the website).
I am not sure of the website but the airlines that brought the prices down is mesa airlines. They advertised starting interisland service at $39 one way and hawaiian and aloha brought down their prices to match.
Hope you get in on the $39 one way flights too!!

yes yes yes!! Thanks for mentioning this. I didn't realize that someone's trip was so soon. There is thunderstorms in Hawaii right now. It sucks. I feel really bad for people who have been visiting in the past few weeks. There's been patches of sunshine here and there but for the most part it sucks. Kauai has gotten the brunt of the storms. They had a dam collapse and I think 7 people got washed away. They ended up closing one of the roads and some tourists got stranded. They did inspect the other dams and found that they should hold up. Hopefully the rain will let up by the time disers visit.
