Hi there - my husband and i are thinking of taking a weekend vacation to San Diego the first weekend of August, I know it's high tourist time then, but we're trying to go cheap since i'm going to DL in November with my mom. Anyway, I was sondering if anyone has any inexpensive hotel suggestions, or maybe some areas you think would be good to look into? Thanks in advance for the help! :goodvibes

I'm not sure if you been to San Diego. It's like a giant city lots of people spread out over a big area.

So if you skip the area right near the Zoo, Legoland and the convention center and Beach, you are left with lots of options.

Are you thinking just cheap or nice area but cheap. What sort of dollar amount per night?

This is my standard hotel suggestion for San Diego Old Town Inn http://www.oldtown-inn.com/

The rooms range from really inexpensive for your basic room to still reasonable for a large room with a kitchen (I have stayed in both and found them clean and liveable).
They have free parking, free breakfast with make your own waffles (I don't know why but I still find this a fun novelty) and the hotel is across the street from Old Town State park and more importantly the San Diego Trolley. If you plan to do some sightseeing in the city the trolley is a good idea, it's cheap and has lots of stops near touristy places.
DH and I drive down but unless we are going somewhere far out (like the wild animal park) we like to take the trolley so we don't have to drive and so we don't have to deal with parking, especially downtown. But when we do drive somewhere it is right off the 5 so it is easy to get to everything.

We have stayed at this hotel several times (will be there again next month) and have had nothing but good
experiences. It is not fancy but is clean and cheap with good amenities and a great location.

Where are you visiting? Where we used to live (in San Diego) was in an area called Mission Valley. It was right next to the freeway and super conveint since downtown/the zoo/the beach were 20 minutes away. However, legoland is 40 minutes away, so it's dependent on what attractions you want to see.
