Anyone have any help for Moluscum Contagiosum?

My poor DS5 has Moluscum Contagiousum (sounds like something from Harry potter doesnt it!? )

And poor little soul.. its ghastly...

big itchy blisters... all over his torso.

the worst thing is that they last for up to about 18 months...

Does anyone have any ideas for home treatment of this condidtion. The doctors tell us it will just disappear in time, but every time anyone sees it.. they really freak out.. its like the worst case of chicken pox you have ever seen!

My DD picked this up from school too. I am afraid it lasts and can be very annoying for them. My dd had them behing her knees in the crease of her legs and now has them on her elbows. The teacher keep insisting I take her to the doctors. I went twice and each time they said there is no treatment.

Asked DH about this as even as a nurse I hadn't heard the name...sorry he says there is absolutely nothing you can do. It will resolve on it's own...but it can take many, many months

My DS had this as a toddler, and it did last for years. If I remember correctly, our GP prescribed a cream called Fucidin H. I think this was because DS scratched them and they got infected, but it did work to clear them up, and they haven't come back....

Hi Leise, yes we have that cream too.. and yes.. it is clearing the infection...
Do you remember how long it took from the time you started to use it?

They were so angry and big and infected before.. now they are not infected mostly, its looking a bit better...

There are some diagnostic photos on molluscum.com - but be warned, some are really gross and of rude bits! dont go past the faces and you will be fine!!!

Its just its so shocking for people to see as they are huge warty fluid filled blisters...and when people see it they go "Oh my god, whats that? - is it contagious!?"

We go to wdw on 31st March and I would love for it to be cleared up by then!

Hi, I don't think it took very long to clear up, no longer than a week. But my DS's blisters were quite small; they looked like loads of warts all over his legs. Once they went though, they never came back

My DD (also 5) has this and has had it for about 8 months with no sign of it going yet. Ive been to see two doctors - both of whom said there was nothing that could be done and wouldnt prescribe anything. I saw the School Nurse about it last week and she is "looking into it" for me.

Its really unsightly and several of the teachers and parents at the school have asked me about it (they all thought it was chicken pox). Im just glad DD is still too young to be that self conscious about it.

My MIL is a homeopath but none of her remedies have worked either (hmmm, why am I not surprised, they never do!).

I hope your son feels better soon - its horrible for them isnt it?

Both my middle and youngest DD's has suffered with this, although not at the same time. Middle DD had it on her torso and on her arms, youngest DD just had it on her legs. Luckily, neither of them had it really badly so no-one else really noticed it, like Leise said they looked like small warts. Middle DD had it for about 13 months, then there was a gap of a year, then younger DD got it and hers stayed for about 18 months.
My GP did give me a cream to put on for when they were scratching so they did not get the spots infected but I can't remember what it was called. I know I only had to use it a couple of times. I think my DD's were very lucky and got off quite lightly with it. And once it went, it has not come back again. If I remember correctly, the summer sun helped clear it up. Hopefully the Florida sun will do that for your son, SammieG

Just a thought, if t hasn't cleared by your holiday, you may need to get a Dr's letter stating that it's not contagious. Otherwise the airline might well not let you fly.

Our youngest DD had this a couple of years ago, she was around 5 too. Hers were on her face! She was traumatised, as the other children at her school made fun of her! They lasted around 18 months. Nothing we tried cleared them up. We even had DMIL sent some medication from the States. Apparently it is contagious. If the spots are scratched and the fluid from the spots gets on the childs fingers then the spots are spread.

To all who are going through this. Hopefully it will clear up sooner rather than later!

Our DD had it when she was about 7, fortunately it cleared up in the main in about two months, but since hers was in the crease of her elbows and armpits (hot, sweaty areas), it did recur (but VERY mildly) for a couple of months after, but nothing too bad.

Our doctor was fantastic, even sent a letter to school and swimming club saying there was nothing that could be done since Katie has a real complex about having the "lurg"

Yes, I remember my GP saying it is one of those things that we all come into contact with all the time, especially children (like nits and worms!!! but it tends to affect children more than adults because their immune system isn't as good as adults, also some children just don't seem to get it. My elder DD never got it, even though she was sharing a room with middle DD at the time she had it. And when my younger DD got it, the GP said it could have been lying dormant in her since my middle DD had it or it just may have been a coincidence and she picked it up from somewhere else.
