I'm going to try to get a ressie for an updo on formal night (fingers crossed). Have any of you ladies had this done & if so what was your experience. Were ressies hard to come by? Did they do a great job, just an OK job? Any input would be helpfull.

Let me preface that I have my hairdressing license. I went for and updo on formal night and was extremely suprised when the girl did not even wash and dry my hair, but instead just teased and combed it up into an up-do. I was very upset that I had spent $40-? something dollars on something that I could have done myself back in the room. My hair did look nice, yes. I was taken in at the scheduled time, but I did wait quite a bit once I was in the styling chair. I was a few minutes late for the cocktail party due to this, so thank goodness I was already in my gown and my makeup was done.

Zacsmom, I am sorely lacking in hair-styling talents & really would just like something simple like a french twist. Did you make ressie as soon as you boarded the ship? I have read that salon ressies on formal & semi-formal night go fast.

Yes, the appointments for formal night were hard to get, thus the close time to the actual event. I booked later in the day on the first day. A simple french twist with a few curls on top is all I got.

I was married on board and I had an updo done. He did a good job, even as far as having me come in the evening before to prep my hair. Since I was getting married on CC, he wanted to be sure it would stay put. I made my ressie right away in the concierge meeting, so that is probably not helpful to you.

I had an up-do for formal night on our October cruise. Since I've had this done at other spas on land in the past I asked when I made the appointment if I should wash my hair prior to coming in. They told me to wash and dry (but not style) before coming in for the appointment - which was fine by me because after spending the day in the pool I needed another shower and wash anyway!

I paid about $60 (with tip) for a very nice, elegant 'do - lots of curls and bobby pins and hair spray. I could never have done something like that on my own and since it was for vacation I didn't mind splurging on it. The prices are high but they can be - where else are we going to go if we want a salon / spa service? That doesn't excuse poor service but I think it would do everyone well to remember that a lot of these spa workers are fairly young and inexperienced. If you want a certain hairstyle or look for formal night I suggest you ask for it. If you are disappointed with the final result, say something - a good stylist in a good salon will try to meet your needs. And based on my experiences at the Vista Salon and Spa during my week on the Magic, I'd say all the employees there were more than accomodating.

BTW - I made my appointment shortly after the spa started taking reservations on embarkation day. I had a late dinner seating so I made my hair appointment for 7PM - there was almost no one there at that time. They told me the biggest hair rush was between 3 - 5:30 on formal and semi-formal nights to accomodate first seating and people who wanted to hit the shows before second dinner seating.

When you go to Vista Spa on the first afternoon to make your updo appt, go to the front desk. There will be a line in the back of the spa for spa treatments, but hair and nail appts are made up front.

By the way, I had my hair done twice during my September Magic cruise. I made one appt the first day and then made the second appt later in the week. At first, they had no open times. I asked to be placed on a wait list...I got a call with an open appt about an hour later.

Happy Sailing! :sunny:
