Just had to follow up on two things. We do have the dual-tuner DirectTV/Tivo combo and still havent run out of space. We are, however, looking forward to getting the HD unit so that we'll have his-n-hers Tivos!!
Regarding the save option... saving shows to tape is far from "forever" but it does allow portability. Later this year Tivo will update the stand-alone units with a "Tivo to go" option they announced at CES last month. It will let you download to a computer for remote viewing. There are also stand-alone Tivo units with built-in DVD recorders that can do the trick, but they are pricey. I have a few things I've wanted to keep indefinitely, so I've taped them off using my camcorder, then transferred them to my computer and burned them to DVDs. It's fun to do that with things like the Super Bowl ads, too. Since it's all digital, it transfers easily (albeit in real time).
