Anyone have a root canal recently?

I have to go to the dentist today and there is a possibility that I will have to have a root canal done on this tooth. My dentist said they have changed a lot in the past few years and aren't as painful but all I can think about is root canal=pain.

I know I have to get this done but all I kept thinking last night was I sould have called and resceduled this. I am grumpy as a bear thinking about it.

My hubby has an irrational fear of dentists and of the pain they cause.

He had to have 3 teeth done last fall........and I called to tell the dentist about hubbys fears.

They were GREAT with him....they gave plenty of pain meds, and they used some really neat distraction techniques for him. They talked to him constantly to make sure he was doing ok.

They scheduled his root canals for 3 different days, which, initially I thought was a mistake. I figured once he had the first one, he wouldn't go back. But he did, and finished all 3 sessions!

I just asked him again how it went and he said

"NO WORRIES! I'd do it again!"

I have had two done in a little over a month. Ugh. Had my second one last night actually. While there is some pain right after, it's really just soreness. And if you complain they will give you a script for pain meds.

I hate the dentists, I hate even getting my teeth cleaned, I go every six months cuz I KNOW I HAVE to, but I hate it nontheless. Something about people's hands in my mouth, blech. Plus I am a big chicken

So the short of it, if I survived, you will too. It really wasn't that bad, just takes a long time.

had one last week ( well the first half of it anyway, it was infected so they had to pack it with meds and I go back on the 25th to finish it off) anyway, I made REALLY clear that I dont like the dentist as my last root canal was bad. He made sure that he gave me LOTS of orajel THEN put the needle in I didnt feel a thing!

This new periodontist that I saw was great! They had virtual reality glasses and a selection of movies. I sat and watched the " Wedding Planner" and was very relaxed! The trick is to find a good periodontist IMHO.

Is the tooth upper or lower? That makes a difference too.

I did, but unfortunately, my story doesn't have much of a happy ending. The actual root canal wasn't very painful at all, they really numbed me up. The problem was, the tooth that needed the root canal had a crown on it. So they had to go through the crown. Of course, that wrecked the crown. So I went to get a new crown. (Still paying on the root canal AND the crown now). Now it seems I have a cavity at the back of the tooth they did the root canal on. They can't fill it without destroying the crown. My only other choice is pull it. I'm leaning that way.

I really like my dentist and I have had two cavities filled this summer already so I know how gentle he is. I am just scared that the root canal will be more painful. Hopefully it won't come to that.

It's a lower tooth way in the back, which is why I think the cavity got so bad. I had a top tooth in the same area filled last month and they had to pull my cheek so much I was sore for a couple of days. The tooth never hurt but the cheek was uncomfortable.

another thing to consider is does it hurt allready? If it doesnt relaly bother you it will be easier.

I actually just called my periodontist ( thanks for the reminder) my jaw was aching still ( nothing a little advil didnt take care of but after a week there shouldnt be any pain) I asked if I should be on antibiotics and he said yes! Said that the infection wasnt clearing enough with the meds he packed in there so to get on a cycle of antibiotics would be a good idea.

So off to Walgreens I go lol.

Lisa, if it hurts now it will only be for a couple of days , but if you don't have it done and your tooth hurts, the pain then will be a lot worse, so top your whining and have it done lady !!

I am a big dental coward. I had my first root canal this year and they gave me the gas. It was great. Felt nothing. Sat in the chair watching magnum pi. Get it done

[color=3300ff]I had one a few months ago and I must be the odd one out. And I'm not trying to scare anyone but mine hurt like hell. He gave me novocaine and gas but it seemed like I felt everything. I kept telling him (as best as I could with all that stuff in my mouth) how much it was hurting me. I kept tugging on his sleeve but he didn't do anything. I wanted to stand up and scream at him but I was so drugged I felt as if I couldn't move.
And after all that I couldn't take the pain killers he prescribed me because they made me feel nauseous. So I took ibuprofen. [/color]

Well I am in some major pain tonight and I am going to have to have a root canal. At this point I look forward to the root canal because the tooth hurts so much as it is. It really hasn't bothered me up until today when the numbing wore off and then I was in tears. They ground down the tooth trying to save it and he rebuilt it so that after the rootcanal they can put a crown on it. I was in the chair for an hour and a half today. Thankfully I was able to get an apointment tomorrow with the dentist that will be doing the root canal so hopefully I can get it done soon.

I never thought I would say I wanted a root canal. It can't be as bad as the pain I feel tonight. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Lisa, I can understand where you are coming from , I had a very bad toothache not too long ago , it woke me up in the middle of the night and it was a good thing that dh had some pain killers from his root canal, the next day I went to the dentist and had it pulled. Now I need some work done , and it's going to cost some major bucks too, ouchhhhh.

You fell asleep?!!!! I kept trying to relax by thinking about our WDW trip we just returned from but even that didn't work.

bobcat...I am very much like you. I'm am terrified of dentists and kept putting off my root canal for months. I hate going to get them cleaned. I have very sensitive teeth. It finally got to the point where they told me if I cancelled again, I'd have to find a new dentist. So I had to go! The tooth hurt like crazy, it was so infected. I had the first part done in June and they finished it a week and a half ago. It took forever and my mouth did hurt afterwards for about two days, but during the procedure, it didn't hurt at all. I actually took my headphones and listened to my Disney CD's while they worked on it. I also took some pain meds about 1 hour before my appointment, which did help a lot.

Well Iwent in to see the endontist (not sure if that's the right spelling) that I was refered to today thinking he was going to just take a look at the tooth and then schedule the root canal for another day. I even took the kids with me since I thought it would be a short appointment and it would be more trouble to take them to the babysitters. Well he was ready to do the root canal so it is now done. They offered to reschedule it for me but I knew if I didn't just do it now I would keep putting it off.

This dentist did a wonderful job and the only soreness I feel is in my jaw from being open for so long. Hopefully it stays that way.
