We just bought a laptop for our DD. DD is a very busy 16 YO junior. Not going to justify the purchase for anyone who thinks that is extravagent. It was something that was clearly needed.

So - on some of DD's long days...she will be taking the laptop to school with her, (leaving it in her car while at school) and then going to the library before she goes to work or practice.

DD wants a "computer" backpack. I am somewhat concerned about how "rugged" these are. For some reason, in my mind - I see her just tossing a backpack down, and I would hate for the laptop to get "crunched" by other people's backpacks piling on top.

So - what type of laptop backpacks have you used, and what has been your experience with them.

Thanks,

I had a SwissGear SA1923 backpack at my last job and I loved it. There is lots of padding, especially on the bottom. The pocket where the laptop goes is snug. I was sad to give it back when I left the company.

I need to get another one. I've been eyeing the SwissGear SA1908 on amazon.com. It's currently at $60. I'd buy the SA1923 at that price.

I agree. There is lots of padding to protect the laptop. It is pretty comfortable too.

I would suggest NOT leaving the laptop in the car. I don't think you want a busted screen.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, which means liquid expands in heat and contracts in the cold. And the screens are not easily replaced either. I'd suggest finding a good backpack that she can haul it with her into school. Or maybe even a messenger style bag for just the laptop (without it being too obvious, something she can pull of as being something like a purse).

DD got a laptop last year for Christmas. DH bought an $80 Swiss Army backpack at Best Buy - very rugged and durable with lots of pockets. I think she used it a week. It is a little masculine looking and while not heavy, it is bulky due to the foam padding. She would really prefer a sleeve or messenger type bag.

Oh crud...I NEVER thought about all of this...we are in Wisconsin, gets hot in the fall/spring, and very cold in the winter. (I realize I skipped summer. She won't be taking a computer in the car in the summer.:lmao:)

thanks for the warning.

Personally - I think a messenger-style bag would be better for her and her habits. And - I guess she'll have to take it into school - just wasn't part of my plan.:lmao:

i don't like computer backpack as they are very bulky for my small frame. So I use a neoprene sleeve and put the laptop in whatever bag i happen to carry.

if you have a college near your home check out the stores that cater to the college students. you can find a wide variety of backpacks that are designed to include a laptop.

dd got a dakin brand that has a very thick pocket for her laptop, and since college has already started in most places-you can get some good deals vs. bestbuy or ordering over the internet.

she still has to be careful with it, but even with the best computer protection you don't want to be tossing it into a locker, trunk or setting it where someone might put their feet on it.

I have a Alienware M17x laptop with a 17" screen. So I bought a Alienware backpack. The laptop wouldn't fit in anything else.:rotfl:
It has a bunch of padding and is really fabulous (lots of extras). I highly recommend a laptop backpack.:)

I have a Mobile Edge messenger bag that's designed for my netbook. It's not too bulky, but has enough room for my netbook and my Macbook that I use for school.

vera bradley just made a laptop backpack for this year.

DD just can't stand VB. So - regardless of what I do for a computer bag (be it backpack or messenger style) I know for sure it will not be VB.

I like that whole line of products. The backpack is really nice. Again - I am just concerned about the "smooshing factor. DD is in 2 AP classes this plus has Pre Calc and Physics and Spanish 3. I am always amazed at how much homework she has and how much stuff she brings home every night. I am thinking messenger bag is the way to go...

Thanks for posting. I've never heard of this line before.

We have a North Face backpack that we always travel with. We love it!! It's got a nice, deep, and secure pocket for the computer and tons more room. It's normally our only carry-on for a family of four. We're able to fit the computer, all of our chargers, cameras, books, snacks, DSi's. It's also very comfortable.

I know when I was looking for computer bag for my new laptop I checked out a backpack type one at walmart, I personally didn't like it but I was looking for bag for laptop only and was limited d/t 17in screen size.
