Anyone gotten bad advice from these boards?

Don't get me wrong, I think the DIS boards are a great resource! I just wondered if any of you ever made a decision based on suggestions here and were disappointed with some aspect of the trip.

I can honestly say that all of the tips that I got for our first trip last year made our visit even more wonderful.

Oh great question. I found these boards after I'd been to WDW a million times so they are more to keep up to date and to satisfy a Disney fix. I've seen many times advice that I completely disagree with!

I can't wait to read this thread! :)

I also have to say that advise that I have received from the DIS has always made my trip that much more magical.

I have planned 4 trips to DW and Disneyland. The first was without the help of these boards, just a travel agent, and I feel like I got ripped off!! The other 3, I used all the help I got from here and we had wonderful trips plus, I feel saved money over using a travel agent. I got only what we could use, no extra frills, ect. that were a waste of our money on our first trip. Thanks to all of you who have helped people like me!!!!!

I've depended on this board for the past three years. Ultimately, I am responsible for my own decisions, but, I read as many differing views as I can and decide for myself, if it involves making a choice.
If it's a simple matter of passing on concrete and helpful information such as codes, pricing, changes etc. this is a great board.

I think, overall, the Dis doesn't steer people wrong. I have gotten some really great info here & learn new info on a regular basis. That said, I think there are many restaurants and/or resorts that many Disers may love, but some may hate. A lot of these types of decisions should be made based on your own personal tastes & use the reviews of these places as a bonus.

For example - most here LOVE Le Cellier in Canada at Epcot - we ate there in September & were extremely diappointed with the entire experience. In no hurry to go back. But, we've also tried many new restaurants thanks to the boards! :teeth:

So many responses, so fast! But hasn't anyone gotten a restaurant recommendation or something that they didn't like? Personally, I worry that I am overthinking some of my plans based on these boards.

thank goodness we all have minds of our own and make decisions on what we like and dislike........can you imagine getting into some of the resorts and restaurants when a zillion people all are thinking the same thing at the same time........we would be in bad bad shape...
codes and prices are good to know and yes I have used the boards for ideas even though we have been almost 20 times

I knew alot about Dinsey before i ever started reading these boards. I must ahve made over 20 trips before i started posting.I come here to read anout new things to experience Dinsey even though i dont know when my next trip will be, to learn other peoples opinions of the places i like and the ones i dont like.

Interesting question,
I think others have stated it more clearly than I. Opinion is one thing, but I find that the DIS is best for pointing people in a direction- then it's up to you to evaulate your own research.

Take the transportation board. I picking up info on codes, coupons etc for National and for sedan companies. THen I compare it against my priorities and make my own judgement call.
I would say I value the DISer opinion over a official DIS statement though.
- FL Tours is being pushed by the DIS and DU (my travel agent) I dont like that the DIS itself wont promote other good sedan companies. Mousesavers only mentions "Happy Limo".
DIS people- with nothing to gain seem to repeatedly suggest Tiffany Towncar.

I guess I like the common folks opinion- someone just like me! :)

I think we have a wonderful, addictive community!

Personally, I would never decide against somewhere I wanted to try no matter how many people said they didn't like it. Too many people post bad things about some of our favorite restaurants, for example. And people are wild about stuff we hated!

I think you have to ask very pointed questions when you are looking for help about choosing things.

I did get some "questionable" advice at one point that a Limo Company named "Happy Limo" was not good. We did use them as it turned out and they were great.

In fact, on the way back to the airport they drove us in a fancy Expedition with TV's in the seats, it was a real treat.

That's not to say the problems others had with Happy Limo were not legit, but sometimes you have to just use your best judgement.

Of course. Just because we all love Disney, doesn't mean we're all going to like the same things about it. Restaurants are the prime example. I had read many great things about the Flying Fish, even in the guidebooks. Tried it in January, wasn't crazy about it. But who knows, maybe the chef was having a bad night. Maybe, had we tried it the next night we would have loved it. Others have ripped the Sci Fi apart, we love it, and eat there every time we go to MGM. You just have to take advice here with a grain of salt, and decide what makes the most sense for you and yours. Planning should be part of the fun. Don't let it stress you out. :wizard:

I'm new on these particular boards, but in general all the advice I've seen on here is pretty good (how to save money, when and where to watch parades, when to avoid parks, etc).

However, there are many things here that really are a matter of personal opinion and taste. I, for example, don't eat red meat, pork, or game, so I'm extremely limited in what I can order in particular restaurants. I've never once eaten at Le Cellier because it is a glorified steakhouse. Their signature item is cheese soup with bacon, and the bacon seems to be cooked into it rather than added later. Therefore, I don't pay any attention to the recommendations of that one.

I don't like chlorine, so I have never visited the Disney water parks, so all the people saying "Oh, you simply MUST try BB or TL" just aren't suggesting anything that appeals to me. Likewise, I don't pick resorts based on the pool, as the whole chlorine issue arises again.

In other words, don't do something that doesn't necessarily fit with the type of person you are just because a lot of people on here say it is wonderful.

And keep in mind that no matter how much people rave about the baklava in Morrocco, it contains nuts :)

It's hard to follow all the advice when it comes to dining in Disney or anywhere else for that matter because everyone has such different tastes and likes and dislikes. Fine dining is different for people, some are used to eating at places like the Ritz Carlton and some fine dining is Red Lobster.

I don't think that I've ever read bad advice here at all, I think the advice is usually right on. I;'ve been to Disney way too many times, we were spending about 26 nights a year there and just started to slow down last year and I've learned things on this board. It really is the best place to get ideas, discounted codes, thoughts, and suggestions. And it's also one of the best places to get support, whether for a Disney trip or for something that's happened to you personally! :cheer2: :grouphug: :cheer2:

I like the fact that they let you mention other companies. I was on another site recently and the offical TA was just as RUDE as they come. I was amazed reading her posts. She was being rude to people because they were doing it on thier own or questioning her fees. YIKES!

I have seen some advice I just laugh at, but.... I am not one to cook in the room for instance.

I do tend to use the board sponsors since I know this thing costs a fortune to keep running and I want to keep it going for free!

The advise I have gotten from this board has always been right on. The tips and tidbits have added to our Disney experience and I wouldn't start planning a vacation without it. This is the most up to date guide anyone could ever find.

The only time I've been disappointed was when I booked a stay at CSR because of raves on the boards. I think my expectations were way too high. I liked CSR, but i didn't love it.

Other than that, most of the advice on here has helped me enjoy each and every trip. I would never have booked an Illuminations cruise (or been able to book one) except for this board--and that turned out to be a highlight of the trip. I book CRT for breakfast using the tips here. I've done tours, etc. at the recommendations of DISers. I love this board.
