Anyone getting the Kindle Fire???

Something interesting that I read this morning. It seems that B&N is limiting the storage space available on the Nook for content that is not purchased thru B&N to 1GB. The Kindle Fire does not limit the available storage. This was supposedly confimed with B&N.

Not sure how they can do that on the device itself...as it allows for SD cards so you can store as much material as you want on that before you even put it in the Nook.

I don't know--reading about the Nook Tablet makes me think I might get that one instead. I don't like that the Fire does not have an SD slot, so you are limited to what you can download vs. bringing your own content. I know Amazon has their "cloud", but when you are away from Wi-fi, or the cloud is down you can't get to anything there, right? If it's on my SD card, I can always get to it. It sounds like the Tablet has a better screen, more RAM and memory. Not as many apps as the Fire, but they will come. I'm more interested in reading, email, web browsing, music and movies anyway.

I may just wait until a week after the launches and see what the masses think. It bugs me that neither B&N or Amazon has let anyone play with the devices to give a well-informed review on actual performance.

When I was trying to decide on an E-Reader over a year ago, I looked over Kindle and Nook and finally decided on 1st Generation Nook...never regretted the decision. I liked that it could be expanded (though I never used that and I have tons of books on it that I haven't gotten around to reading), loved that it read different formats, loved that I could rent e-Pub books from my library for FREE and read those. It was great.

That being said, I did just upgrade to a Nook Simple Touch and love that even more. It's much smaller and lighter and has a longer batter life. It doesn't have the small color touch screen that my 1st Gen Nook had but I don't miss that. Browsing on the Nook 1st Gen was not a fun thing and it's not fun on this one either...but that's not my primary purpose. First and foremost it's an e-reader and it is perfect for that.

Now the new Nook Tablet is not THAT much different from the Nook Color that we just purchased. If we are already thrilled with the Nook Color that we own (which is a bit heaver and supposedly slower than the new Nook Tablet) I can't imagine we'd be disappointed with the Nook Tablet. However as tempting as it is to upgrade, I just don't see the point right now. We are just getting used to the Nook Color and everybody loves it, including the kids when DH lets them play with it. I would highly recommend any of the Nook products.

It has USB - as long as you have a computer (doesn't have to have wifi, just internet) won't you be able to can connect the Fire to the computer and then transfer stuff to the kindle fire?

Ooh, I hope this is true... Can anyone chime in on this?

I have a laptop that I do all of my internet browsing on; we have the Clear wireless USB thing that plugs in to my laptop so I can get internet with that anywhere I go (usually). Maybe this can plug in to there too?

I am okay either way, as long as I can access all the books, movies, etc.

This isn't correct, the Kindle has a USB connection that you can use to drag your own content onto it from your computer (where you would be loading your SD card anyway). What the Nook SD slot does is give you additional storage if you need it.

Well, additional storage would be a good thing. I don't like having things stored on the internet. I'd like to be able to get to what I have without needing to be on the internet.

I may go play with a Nook Color. Do they have them on display at B&N? SHould give me an idea of the Nook Tablet.

Yay! I'm thrilled with my choice and cannot wait until DS opens it!

I ordered mine weeks ago- should ship on 11/15 and get here on the 16th- just in time to take to Disney. My biggest objection to the new Nook Tablet is this : "The Nook Tablet has some apps of its own, but will not connect to the Android market." and the fact that I already have so much content thru amazon. Plus, their customer service is outstanding. And I have no concerns about the cloud going down. The whole point of a cloud is that it is a ton of servers- it would take an act of G_d or terrorism to take out all the servers hosting the cloud.

I am only mildly concerned about the wi-fi thing. Free wi-fi is easier and easier to come by and you can also buy smart wireless cards w monthly subscriptions if you know you will be OO wireless range for an extended period of time. Plus the Amazon Silk browser is a new type of browser and is supposed to be waaaay fatsre than the standard android browser on the nook.

The be-all, end-all is that $200 is not a huge risk and is something In can justify. I couldn't justify the Ipad- or even the Ipod touch (hich is what I think the Fire really competes with)

Most libraries have rentals for FREE with no limits (well limits on how many at one time can be checked out, but not on how many you can read in a month)! Between the library, Lending sites and the free content on Amazon I am never short of things to read on my Kindle.

If you google, you can see it does go down, maybe not all the time, but it happens. It just makes me feel more comfortable too have access to data I might need when I don't have wi-fi...

And I hear it is pretty easy to root the Nooks to run Android Gingerbread which gives you access to pretty much the whole Android market. Truth is, I probably won't do that though. I stick to the simple apps like solitaire and some of the other classics. I am more interested in movies, music and books, and browsing when I don't have access to my laptop. I'm thinking this would be good for trips. The only problem is that I like to upload my pics and my camera uses a regular SD card, not a mini. But DS will always have his laptop attached at the hip

This is true FOR NOW of the Nook Tablet. However since they have already figured out how to easily make the Android Market available on the Nook Color (either by loading it onto an SD card like I have done with the Color or by updating the actual system) I can only imagine it will not take very long for similar software to be available for the new Nook Tablet. Of course, if you want instant access to Android Market and don't want to wait, then Amazon would be the way to go. I did like a lot of the Apps available on the Nook Market, and some were free, but I did not want to even pay $1 for any of the others.

My parents are planning on getting a Kindle Fire for my 3 daughters, ages 10, 12 and 13. The kids all have asked for an Ipad or laptop. Will the Kindle Fire be good for them? I have a Kindle and they are always asking if they can read a book on there so I know they'll like that part. Any ideas on how good web browsing, etc is on the Fire??

Being a canadian, I hear a lot of content will be blocked, so I will getting DW a Kobo Vox instead... ( Same idea, Canadian manufacturer )

My sister is a beta tester for the Fire. She also has an ipad (1 and 2). So far she says she likes the Fire and is glad to have it.

YAY that is good to hear. I was starting to 2nd guess my decision for the fire with what others are saying about the new Nook. I think I will stick with the Fire.

Does anyone have a list of apps they are planning to load onto their Fire? DS decided he wanted one, we pre-ordered, and have been browsing apps....I can't tell which ones are "Fire-friendly". I know it shows Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds in the ads. It also mentioned EA games in a blog post, but I can't find any...
