Anyone get a second opinion for orthodontics?

We are starting to go through this now with my son. I see many of you are getting 2 to 3 opinions. Are these consults free?

Thanks everyone. I've started asking around for recommendations for orthodontists to go to. DD8 has two adult teeth above/behind her other front teeth so it's going to be complicated. She had 2 baby teeth pulled to make room and we were supposed to wait 6 months before starting the ortho. I'm going to get more opinions.

Thanks again!

Yep, definitely get a 2nd opinion or more. It definitely worked out well for us.

When the ortho we ended up choosing was going over his treatment plan I questioned why he chose to use x instead of Y. He asked if another ortho had suggested the alternate treatment plan. I said yes and told him we had seen a couple of other orthos.

He asked how his price compared, so I pulled out written quotes from the 2 other orthos we'd seen. I'm not sure he was quite prepared for that, you should have seen the look on his face. :rotfl:

But he actually offered to match the lowest price quote I had. Score, especially since not only did I like his treatment plan best, but both the kids and I liked him, his office, his staff, etc. way more than either of the other 2 orthos we'd seen.

Of course I'm sure the fact that I had price quotes for up front cash payment with 2 kids starting treatment didn't hurt. :rolleyes1

Good Luck with your search OP. Keep looking until you find an ortho that is a good fit for you and your DD.

Yes! If the consult isn't free then don't go.

Two places I called wanted to do xrays as part of the consult. If you go with their services, the fee for that is put towards the treatment. The one place we did go the consult was free and he gave an estamted price. The next visit would be xrays and molds which there is a fee for.

Has your regular dentist done x-rays as part of an exam recently? If yes, ask him for copies of the x-rays and bring them with you to the consult. Tell the ortho you don't need x-rays done as you already have a current set. That's what we did.

We got three opinions because #1(our pediatric dentist who also does braces) and #2(the established orthdonist that everyone goes to) were very different.:rotfl2:

We went with #3. #3 was similar to #2, but a lot cheaper. The doctor was just out of school and building his practice. This doctor has turned out to be the premier specialist in our area. My kids loved him!

Yes, we did 4 consults. The 1st 2 were given to us by my Dds pediatric dentist. The other 2 we chose by word of mouth. Ask everyone who they use, what they like and don't like! Ask people how long they wait for appointments, does the office always run behind?

#1 just was kind of gruff with Dd, she was afraid of him. #2 we both liked and it was well explained, #3 was horrible (spelled name wrong on paperwork, wanted to pull teeth, etc.) #4 never really explained what they were going to do, had the flashy office, & knew it was going to be $6800 when we walked in the door.

Since #1, #2 and #3 all had the same treatment plan we went with the one we liked the best. I am traveling to another town, but we both like him, the staff and it was oddly the least $ of them all. Her friends at school all use #2 and that was how we heard about him. They are right on time with appointments, and easy to work with!

Thank you for all the replies!

We had a consultation with the ortho that included many pictures and a 3-D xray that showed 2 of her top teeth behind and possibly above her other adult teeth! Scary. I don't think I can bring those x-rays because there were part of a free consultation.
