Hubby and I are thinking of moving, we were toying around with the Charlotte area, (Waxhaw, Ft Mill,SC,). Now we are throwing Raleigh in the mix. We have 3 kids, DS13, DD 11 and DS9. Work is not an issue, we are moving because we can and have the opportunity. Need any advice on areas and schools in Raleigh. TIA

This link may help with facts and figures (you may have already used it for the Charlotte area):

You may wish to look up local issues too and visit school board/district sites. We do not live there, but it seems like someone in the news is always talking about how overcrowded Wake County schools are. From what I've read in the news there may be reassignments going on there

I know it can be hard to decide - we went through a move about 5 years ago.
Good luck!

If you are looking for a quality of life move, you probably don't want Raleigh proper. Outlying areas like Cary, Wake Forest, parts of Durham, or other small bedroom communities will give you better schools, less traffic, and more bang for your housing buck. Still, lots of advantages in the triangle area - great cultural and sports events, and airport that can get you anywhere, and pretty good weather. (if you don't like ice storms, however, you might want to look further East in NC!)

I agree with mom2travel about the Wake County schools. You may want to research current events on some changes being made there to see how you feel about them.

Leaving all politics aside about the Wake County school board (which by the way is disallowed in this forum) - you can find quite a few threads about Raleigh and the surrounding area by searching on previous forums here. Also, check the keywords - Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, etc...

Thanks for the info everyone. Now if you all could just get together take a vote and let me know where I should move. lol

It is really hard when you don't have to move. I have lived in Florida all of my life, kids are happy here, but wouldn't mind moving, we do have relatives in the Charlotte area.

I do think I am crazy sometimes, we have good friends, kids are active in sports. We are 2.5 hours from Disney, and we are Disney crazy, also close to the cruise line. I must be nuts. Oh well, I will have to think about it some more. I will probably drive myself crazy.

good point - I edited appropriately

Choose Morrisville, NC and you won't have to worry too much about what is going on with our lovely school board. In Morrisville, you are close to everything(Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Apex, airport) The schools in this part of the county are great.

Reassignments are coming, but not due to overcrowding. Most are due to moving back to community schools as opposed to busing kids all over the county. Researching it won't help, as they have not even come up with a working plan, much less decided anything. Even those of us living here have no idea what next year will bring.

That being said, I love living in the Raleigh area. We are out near Garner. We love having the space, less traffic and small town feel that you don't find on the Cary/Durham side of town. Yet we are still convenient to everything. Cary is nice if you will be working in RTP, Wake Forest if you will be in North Raleigh, and Garner/Fuquay-Varina if you work Downtown.

Charlotte is 2.5 hour drive, the beach is about 3, and the mountains are 3.5 hours away. (And Disney is 9... not close, but not a hard drive, either.)

I have family in the Charlotte area. They live in Matthews and Mint Hill. Both are nice, and not too far out. I'd prefer the Mint Hill area if I had to pick.

I suggest the research not to find out who will go to what to school, but to understand the attitudes behind the push to move back to "community schools", and to understand what that is code for in NC. We can't discuss it on the boards, as BalootheBear points out, but there is plenty about it available for the finding.

Yes, but I live here and my kids are in school here, and you are not. Not everything is exactly as it seems in the news. A lot that goes out through AP is sensationalized by certain groups trying to push their agendas. I am living it on a daily basis.
