anyone from NC?

It would depend heavily on what career field you're both looking into. I lived in the western part of the state and had no problem job wise (nurse) but DH couldn't find employment there.

The entire state is beautiful and each area has something unique to offer. We have a vacation home there and most of our family still resides there full time. We'll move back permenently after DH retires. :goodvibes

I'm sorry North Carolina is no longer taking new members ;)

Seriously, just pm and I'll try to answer your ?'s

I am just West of Asheville.I am in between Asheville and Maggie Valley. There are some good schools around here and the crime is really not bad at all.Alot less than most places for sure. There is not so good areas but for the most part it is an Awesome place to live.Have been here all my life.
We live in Canton but we will be moving to Asheville soon as it will be a closer drive to my Dhs workplace.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I'm in Arden, just south of Asheville. We moved here 2 years ago from NYC and just LOVE it here.

I had a harder time finding a job then I thought I would however. I am in human services (specifically working with teenagers and adults with Autism), and thought I would find a job easily.....it took over 6 months to find something permanent. My partner Lisa had an easier time, she is in marketing and currently works for Highland Lake Inn in Flat Rock.

Asheville is a cool and funky little city. I saw a t-shirt recently that says " If you're too weird for Asheville, you're too weird." and that is definitely true. Asheville and the surrounding towns have lots to offer culturally....art galleries, lots of good theater, great restaurants with affordable prices, and scenic walkable down town areas.

There is SO much to do here....the Biltmore Estate, the NC Arboretum, the Blue Ridge Parkway, lots of hiking and mountain biking trails, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, white water rafting, etc. If you love being outdoors, Asheville and the surrounding area is the place.

As far as crime and schools are concerned.....I don't have statistics, but I do know that Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools do great things for special education students. The PEP program run by the Buncombe County schools is phenomenal and I am very impressed with special education services offered by Asheville City schools as well.

We have not bought a home yet, we are renting, but I do know that housing prices in this area range a great deal, but tend to be on the high side as compared to other parts of the state.

We love it here and would not even think about living anywhere else. If you have any other questions about anything specific, please do not hesitate to ask and I will find the answer if I don't know it already.

NC is a great state. There is something for everyone from the mountains to the beach and all of it is easily accessible when you need a break. One of my co-workers moved to Asheville in August. She loves it there. The only problem she is having is finding a house to be for a reasonable amount of money. Granted she is looking for a smaller house for just one person but she says there is nothing in her range that is livable.
