Anyone from Albany NY

out there?? Please help
I have a friend and her Dh and 2 Cats that will be moving to Albany the 5&6 of April. She has a job (with kids I can't say anymore than that) He is a contractor/builder/laborer looking for work. They are also trying to find a reasonable apartment. Because he's be out of work since Jan and her job is only part time here (which is what led to the move) moneys tight but they don't want to end up in a dump, her jobs dangerous enough. We will be helping them out with some of the other logistics and getting her set up in this job.
So I guess what I'm asking are there any areas to avoid, anyone they could contact that might lead them to a place to live or job for him?
These boards have always come through for me. I'm usually just read the CB and post here rarely. Any help would be great. Any Albany is getting a wonderful patient woman!!

I live about 10 miles outside Alaby. I'm not sure about the housing/job market because I've owned my own home for 28 years and haven't been job hunting. They might try the area newspaper.

Mnay areas in Albany have become high-crime. Ditto for some areas in Troy and Schenectady..

I would lean towards Colonie, Latham, Guilderland, Rotterdam, Rensselaer, North Greenbush, East Greenbush, Castleton, Brunswick, Schodack - all are within a very easy drive to Albany - no more than a half-hour and some areas are much less than that.

Is the DH in the union? If not, there always seems to be plenty of construction-type jobs in the tri-city papers.

Do they have children? If not, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a small apt. in the suburbs.

There's an apartment complex called Northway 11 communities in Malta, NY (about 30 min. from Albany). Their apartments rent somewhere in the $600 range, but that includes heat in some of the apartments. They all have garages and I think they allow cats. My husband and I lived there before we bought our house. I would also reccomend the Times Union as a good source.
