I checked my airline's website and I can't find anything about gate checking double strollers? Does anyone know if it's allowed?

I have s Joovy Ergo that I'd like to take for our trip instead of renting - we will be traveling with our 2 1/2 and 5 year old (who is on the 98th percentile for height and weight). I don't think buying an inexpensive umbrella stroller when we got there would be an option for him because of his size.

This is our first time flying with children. I feel like I need a flying 101 book! I have so many questions. I thought I would be able to get more answers from the airline's website. Thanks so much!!

It depends on the airline you are flying with. I know delta and southwest will gate check a double without a problem but American will not. There are some other airlines that will not either. Do understand that if the stroller is damaged that no airline will be held responsible for the damages.

We did with Southwest.... Maybe you could try calling or emailing them? If you can gate check your stroller I suggest it - not only is it a great item to lock your crazy kids in (well, at least my crazy kids!!) but they are great transporters of bags, coolers, carseats etc :)

We checked our double stroller with airtran and delta w/o any problems. Like a PP said, you could call your airline. Have a great vacation!

I have had no problem gate checking a double jogging stroller with Jetblue a few years ago. This year I bought a double umbrella stroller at a tag sale for $10. It fold up compactly and will fit on the buses easily. My kids are 4 & 6 and didn't want to hassle of lugging the double jogger around with us.

Did once and never again. Airline dropped it off the conveyor while loading(several eyewitnesses) and then blamed it on cargo shift and that is not covered. So they broke my brand new expensive double stroller and I was out of luck and a lot of money. After that, we rented from orlandostrollerrentals. I would never risk it again.

we checked our double combi on Jetblue with no trouble (gate checked). It was a craigslist stroller- so we didn't pay much at all and wouldn't have been upset if it was broken by transit... i would not travel with anything expensive.

If your airline's website didn't mention any limit on your stroller size for gate checking, you should be okay. Be sure and protect it with a stroller bag.

I think there are different restrictions for gate checking than for checking at the check in counter. For example on certain carriers there is no problem checking a double or jogging stroller at counter but they wouldn't allow you to gate check due to the size. Would call to verify so you aren't surprised. That said I gate checked a jogging stroller and they probably dropped it and e front wheel was all wonky afterwards. Thank goodness it was a Craigslist stroller. I'm NOT checking my fancy new double and will possibly bring two umbrella strollers instead, I can get a decent umbrella for the cost of renting a double in Orlando. We have a decent umbrella already and I saw a cute Minnie stroller on amazon.

I've gate checked with United and Delta with no issues. Just be sure to get a gate check tag. We always buy travel insurance anyway, so I suspect if something happened to it, it would be covered. :)

We have tried both strategies. For Disneyland, we gate checked our double stroller with Southwest. There were no problems, but we did need to haul it everywhere which was one extra thing getting to and from the airport. For Disneyworld, we rented one with the company everyone recommends. It was cheap, clean and they delivered it before we arrived. We ended up liking it better than our double stroller at home. Given the choice, I would rent, especially if you are going to Disneyworld. We haven't tried renting with Disneyland.
