Anyone Find They Get More Leg Cramps With Atkins?

It seems that whenever I go on the Atkins diet, I wind up getting leg cramps. Is it just a coincidence, or is there a connection here?

Are you getting at least 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water each day? You also made need to take potassium supplements. Read Dr. A's recomendations in his book (I forget the exact dosage).
 
Hey! I had TERRIBLE foot and toe cramps at night a couple of nights while I was doing the really low carb thing for 2 weeks. I never even thought that maybe it was related to that!

Haven't had any cramps since. I'm still trying to stay lower in carbs than I was eating before, but not as low as those 2 weeks.

Atkins has a strong diuretic effect during the first week of Induction. When you lose a large amount of water as you do at the start of any weight-loss program, you also lose electrolytes, which contain the minerals potassium, magnesium and calcium, resulting in leg cramps. To replace these vitanutrients, salt your food to taste and take a mineral supplement that includes calcium, magnesium and potassium.

My MIL had severe leg cramps at first but increased her water and they went away. Apparently all the Chrystal Light she was drinking just wasn't as helpful as her water.

Thanks for the info! I do take vitamin supplements, and drink plenty of fluids. Maybe I should increase the fluids too. Maybe it's just a phase that the body has to adjust to. :) :) :D
