Anyone fill out a FAFSA lately?

I'm stuck on the "assets" portion because they ask about listing 529 plans, which we have for our kids, but I will be the one taking classes, not my girls who are only 8 and 6 :)

are you required to fill it out? I just did DH and mine and neither application required us to fill out that portion so I just skipped it.

I would also assume they are referencing plans in your name, not ones in your girls name.

I just helped DH fill out his and if I rememeber correctly, it depends on the school. Some require the listing of assests and some do not. We just asked the financial aid advisor if they needed that info and she said No!

I believe you ARE supposed to list those, because chances are that, although they're intended for your girls, they're in your name. Therefore they are considered assets. But I agree to ask the financial aid department.
I'm pretty sure the only thing that isn't taken into consideration with the FAFSA is retirement savings.

Anything that is in your name (or in the case of a child going to college, their name) must be declared for the FAFSA. It doesn't matter the reason for the account, just whose name it's in. Even savings bonds, which we had forgotten our daughter had been given as a baby. They do check.

Only if required by the FAFSA. The form specifically said that we were not required to fill that portion out. It's based on your income and tax liabilities I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies. I am only filling out the FAFSA because the organization that I'm trying to get a scholarship through requires it. Otherwise I'd just skip it--I'm sure they would like to give a lesser scholarship if I could qualify for some government help--problem is I don't want any more loans (I'm still paying off my 4 year degree from nearly 13 years ago!!).

I'll check with the organization and the school to see how to list the 529s. I think they're in my kids names, but owned by my husband--without me on them anywhere--that might help :)
