Anyone familiar with MSU and E Lansing?

Hi,

DS just got accepted to MSU for graduate studies starting this fall. He'll be moving to E Lansing in Aug. He will be 23 shortly.He knows no one in Michigan.

Any tips or suggestions for an apt in the area near campus. Areas to stay in or stay away from?

We live in East Lansing. It's a nice town.

There is an area by campus that is all rental homes. They generally aren't well taken care of and are real noisy.


We live East of Hagadorn Road. I would look for something East of Hagadorn. Our neighborhood is all families with few rental homes. It's perfect if he is looking for something not so rowdy.

There are all kinds of places to eat, movie theaters, etc. in and around East Lansing.

We'll be coming out to East Lansing this summer to look at rentals in the area..

DS can't afford much $600-700 tops. How far away from the campus is Hagadorn Road? Glad to hear ELansing is a nice town.


DS is not rowdy and will be very busy with teaching and classes, so he needs some place fairly quiet and decent. He'll be living there 6 years.

Hagadorn borders campus on the East side.

Okemos is also a nice town.

Grand River is the main road through town. Meijer is the grocery store in Okemos where a lot of students shop.

Be careful as to where you choose to live. We lived in the City limits......less them 3 blocks to be out of it, and we didn't find out until tax time that you have to pay city taxes. Out employer was from out of the area and didn't know it either so we had to pay up as of April 15. We loved the area though.

I live in the area as well, hercamore (also went to undergrade and graduate school at State). Does your son want to live by himself? Will he have a car? Which school will he doing his graduate work at? All of these, of course, make a difference on where I might suggest.

Well, how about this? I had no idea I had so many DIS'ers as neighbors. I live in Holt and work at Lansing Community College!

Hi Doug and Amy,

DS will work and study in the Chemical Engineering Dept at MSU. He will have a car.

He is pretty social and would like a roomie, but at present he is looking into l br apts. He's not sure where to look for a roomie. He's leaving all options open right now tho.

Doug, how available is parking on the campus and is it expensive? DS was wondering if biking to campus during decent weather (living fairly close then) would be the way to go.

Ds graduated from Univ. of MN TC and is used to bking 6 miles rt every day (even in the snow). Parking at that campus was very limited and pricy.

I'll ask DH about parking. I see a LOT of students on their bikes. They also use the bus system frequently!

DH used to live in Owen Hall which had a lot of Grad students in it, I think. I'll let you know what he says.

Parking is probably horrible. There are so many decent places to live that I don't think he'll have a problem finding something. There are a lot of rental signs up right now for Summer and even a few for Fall.

Just ask him not to cross Grand River while traffic is moving along at 35mph. I can't tell you how many times I've had students walk right out in front of moving traffic like they expect us just to stop and get rear ended.

I believe campus is bordered on the West by Harrison Road and on the South by Mount Hope (even though there are other buildings and golf courses past Mt. Hope.) There are a few huge parking lots on Mount Hope which I assume are student parking.

My DH works in Holt, Amy and we have a neighbor that works at LCC!! Small world!!!

DS would have LOVED to stay at the UM, but unbelievably, the University does not offer a graduate degree in CE! It's totally nuts!.

No, not at U of M anymore. Loved it there in Ann Arbor, though! Michigan is beautiful. I'm living in New Jersey now, which I like, but Ann Arbor had that college town feel that I loved. Good luck to your DS. College life is fun!

Yes the Midwest is a good section of the country to live in, weather it's MN or Michigan.

Could he be a dorm monitor and get his housing for free? I always thought that seemed like a good gig. My nephew will be attending MS next year, and trust me, he will need a good dorm monitor.

We lived in Lansing.....but we were just a short distance from East Lansing...which is where we screwed up. If we would of know that there was city taxes, we would of lived outside of Lansing.
