Anyone ever volunteer at the YMCA?

I have heard that if you volunteer at the Y, you can get a discounted membership. Does anyone know if this is the case, or does it vary by Y?

Never volunteered but I did work as a day camp counselor for a couple of summers (before and after my senior year of high school).

Of course that was almost 30 years ago so I am sure policies have changed several times since then.

I've been a YMCA volunteer for 15 years. I've never heard of this, but that doesn't mean that some Y's don't have the policy. Each Y Association is autonomous - they pay dues to the National Y but set their own rates and membership policies.

Our Y does a huge amount of scholarshiping, on a sliding scale, for those that can't afford the membership fees. No one is turned away because of the inability to pay. We also encourage everyone to volunteer.

I have friends that did this in the past. You'll need to call your YMCA to see if they have openings.

Around here you get an individual membership and you just pay the difference if you want family.

Forgot to add - At our Y, paid employees (even part time, or seasonal) do get a discount on membership fees.
