Anyone ever use Turbo-Tax?

I thought if you filed your Federdal online you had to file your state online also.

Fire, there's NO such requirement. It's just that many prefer to file their State taxes on-line using the data incorporated into their Federal return.

THanks Eros, we will try the Mass DOR online. I didn't know....

Turbotax was more convenient because it did tranfer the info from the federal form to the MASS form.... it was just frustrating to have paid, and have it not accepted and not be notified.....

When we checked back with TurboTax like you're supposed to in 24 hours, it said "accepted" and then MONTHS later said "not accepted" when it was too late and they got their fee.

Now I am going out to buy a copy! :-)

Just wanted to comment on how "nice" everyone is being on this thread. Clarifications are being accepted instead of people getting all defensive. Makes me feel all warm inside. heehee

I'm a CPA and I use Turbo Tax to do our annual return. I have used it for about 5 years now. I would NOT go back to doing it the old way for anything! Good product.

Yet another CPA (not a tax accountant, mind you) and I love TurboTax!! I started using it about 3 years ago. Basically, once my former firm sold off their consulting side (e.g. my area), we ceased receiving free professional tax software, so I had to find software somewhere.

Wow, follow this link from Webmaster Alex concerning TurboTax about their 'copy protection' scheme:

It's enough to make someone switch to Taxcut.

Thanks for the heads up Jfulcer! I had forgotten that it is a deduction in MA too. Better leave it to the experts.

Yup, it's TaxCut for us, for sure. I hope that everyone who is opposed to TurboTax's bad idea will write to them and let them know that their product will no longer be used. We have used it since 1997, but no more.

For those of you who do not know, you don't have to buy and install Turbo Tax. You can go to www.turbotax.com and do your taxes entirely online. They even let you save and come back later, and nothing goes onto your hard drive. At the end, you simply print your return.

Hope it helps anyone nervous about their software!

Sure learned alot on this post, Thanks!

Might try the on-line filing, but how does it work as far as what to do with our W-2 and 1099 forms? They don't get sent anywhere?

Dumb question I know, but thanks for any help:)

For the last 2 years I've participated in the digital signature - where you mail nothing in. If you don't participate in that, then you print out a form to sign and you mail that with your W2's attached. You've never had to mail in 1099s.

While the online stuff will work I hope everyone will consider whether or not you want to give money to a company that is pulling sleazy stuff like they are.
If they get away with it, other software companies will soon follow. Chances are all the schemes will not be compatible and when you start having problems with your computer it will be very hard to diagnose and fix.
The accountants may think this is great software and I can't disagree, I have always used it, but if we don't start taking a stand we are going to lose control over our own computers.

The above reasons are why we are not purchasing their product, and letting them know why.
