Anyone ever tip at Sonic?

My son told me something today that I had no idea of. I don't know if it's because I rarely eat fast food or if I'm just oblivious over here.

Apparently, Sonic pays their employees like five-something per hour plus tips. They don't pay minimum wage - they pay a tipped salary. And his friend says, "no one ever tips."

I've gone to Sonic a few times during their "Happy Hour" because . . . Raspberry Limeade at half-price! Anyway, I've never included a tip when I pay there and to be honest, I'd never even thought about it before he said something and now I feel bad. I always tip really well!

You guys ever tip there?

I just texted my son who goes to Sonic all the time where he lives in Oklahoma and he says no they don't tip. I'm here in Michigan and have never been to one.

I do tip when they bring it to the car. Once, I tipped in the drive through because we ordered a lot of hand made drinks, and they were very confused by the tip. Are you sure the information you received is accurate? Also, server wage is only $2ish dollar per hour:

The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any pay period, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

We always tip a couple dollars. I figure they're delivering your food to you, so we tip them for the service.

It never occurred to me to tip at sonic. We have a couple other fast food burger places that bring your order to the table as well, and I don't tip at those places - there's not even an option to tip when you pay at the counter. We don't have server wages here, though, so at least they're making minimum wage ($10 an hour now, I think).

That makes sense if they come out to your car with your food. The carhops wear roller skates here!

I'm not sure if that wage is different because we're in Florida. He said it's definitely five-something that his friend makes. I don't think he's worked there long enough to know if they pay minimum wage if they don't make at least the $30 in tips.

At the Sonics that I visit, you can pay with your credit card when you order. There is not a place to put a tip. You run your card yourself and there is nothing to sign. If I happen to have cash (rare), I do tip but usually I pay with my card. Tipping isn't even given as an option. It seems odd that it is a tipped position but the only way to tip is with cash.

I've never been, but I tend to tip - and apparently over tip  everywhere. I don't want to be chased down the street getting shouted at.

I still think TSA should be handing out tipping FAQs for Aussies when we go through border control :D

I used to tip when I would go there. I would get a drink during happy hour and would give anywhere from 50-75 cents. Sometimes $1. But sadly they stopped carrying my drink and I no longer go there.
