I have a Disney trip planned for the first week of Sept. but I will be missing the first week of class. I did not mind until I found out I cant take micro biology this summer due to schedual conflicts and so I will have to take in during the fall. Missing my other classes wont be as big of a deal as I know it will be fairly easy to catch up.

Not sure what to do. I would miss the first 2 classes and the first Lab :confused3

Should I just cancel my trip? :confused3 Not sure I could go any earlier

Well it depends on how hard your class are. If they are easy then go ahead and miss a few days. But for me if I skip a hard class im lost. I try not to miss class but sometimes its just to hard to wake up.

Micro is a hard class but I do read each chapter so even when I miss I am not lost.

Still not sure what to do though but I think we might be going!

I teach college, but I'm taking a couple quarters off (one of my own kids was having a health problem), and lurk here because I miss my "other kids" as my youngsters call them.

Anyway. I hate it when someone comes in a week into class. We're about ready for our first test by then. So, have covered alot of material. Its different later in the quarter when you have an idea if you can handle some of the course work on your own. Also, we do some icebreaking type activities the first day, and that week-late person never quite ends up connected. I do not officially penalize anyone for this, but it is usually a natural consequence. Some teachers do have attendence policies. Can you contact the instructor?

Whosemom, Thank you for the reply. I was really thinking about not going after I read what you wrote but this morning the Micro class I needed this summer opened up for the evening. Now in the fall I will only be missing one history class and one gym (my math class is on Monday and so because of the holiday I wont miss it:goodvibes ). In my opinion those classes are not as hard to catch up with and I am going to try to contact the professor as you suggested.

Thank you

i just have to add my opinion, micro blows...

I have and to take the first week of classes off before because of school related trips. But I am going to have to do it again this year because I am going on a cruise. I have alwas emailed my teachers and let them know what was going on. and if they had any homework for me that I would come by and pick it up.

Lol I sorta did this my current semester. A week in I was taking off for a class to go to DL. (I dropped a class after coming back because I was so behind)

One day you could swing...but two? Truthfully your seat will probably be given to a waitlisted student if you just don't show up. You could write a letter and drop it in the teachers box/send them an Email and that would probably cover you.

I like to plan about a month to two months in advance for my trip and no longer because stuff can come up...that and i'm forgetful.

I'd hafta say that you'll probably be fine, Usually you figure that the first day of class you don't do anything besides the professor reading over the syllabus out loud (like we couldn't read it ourselve in like 5 minutes). Same with the first lab in a lab class, The only time that I ever did anything in the first lab of a class was in Engineering, we were told to "just mess around with Solidworks" to get familiar with it a bit, usually the first lab of a class isn't even held. There have been plenty of times that I have taken classes where I didn't transfer into them until a week or more after the semester started, so you should be fine.
