Asking this for my sister.......

Just how big is this place??

How is the pool area? Is there shady spots? She would be going in June.

We've stayed there 3 times. The place is HUGE and you will be walking alot! The only plus to it is that all of the elevators come down in one area. The bad thing about that is it can be a really long walk to your room.

Try to avoid the Emerald Tower - not as nice and a really LONG walk from the elevator. However, a tip of $5 to $10 when your checking in at the front desk can often get you a room much closer;)

The pool area is great! lots of shade if your are looking for it. We spent lots of time there. They rent innertubes for the "lazy river" but at $15 or more we decided to pass. Make sure to wear sandals to the pool area - we put ours in a locker near the restrooms and then fried our feet walking to the pool. You can check out the pool area online. I believe there are about 5 different pools plus the lazy river.

Nope. I've stayed at Treasure Island, though :)

If she's going mid-week during a non-convention period, she may want to check the website for special deals on suites. We've stayed in a spa suite for only $119 in the past. There are great deals to be had at all the hotels in Vegas if you plan the right dates.

I have stayed at the MGM Grand. I don't know if it still is or not, but when it opened, it was the hotel with the largest number of guest rooms in the world. It is huge. I agree with BriarFoxinWA. The Emerald Tower rooms aren't as nice, and the rooms are far away from everything. We were in the Grand Tower, and our wing was connected to the Emerald Tower, and I found it very overwhelming to look down that long hallway to the end. I never actually walked all the way down, but it was pretty far.

I'm surprising DH with a trip to Vegas next month and we'll be staying at Treasure Island in a tower room. What can you tell me about the place? (Not big gamblers here, we just want to see the casinos, shops and shows.)

It's been a while since we've stayed at TI - but so far it's my favorite! No long walks here! It's a nice hotel and connected by a monorail to the Mirage. I haven't see the pirate show since they added the women to it...although I hear it's pretty lame. We've had the tower rooms and always had an awesome view of the strip.

On a map - all of the strip casinos look pretty close but they are not! Plan to do a lot of walking if you want to visit all of the other casinos. Here' how we've gotten around: The public transportation system is great - $1.50 per person to ride as far as you want. You might have a short wait for a bus but if you want to go down to Luxor/NYNY/MGM this is a great way to get there. You can also valet park at all of the big casinos and just have to give them a small tip when dropping off and picking up your car. There are also tons of cabs around too.

We were just at the TI this past weekend. We go every year for our anniversary (we were married there in 96). We like this hotel because its simple to navigate, not too big, not too extravagant, but very nice. Stay away from the TI buffet. Even when its free, its generally not worth it. The cafe is very decent. Great breakfast food and fast service. If you like Krispy Kremes, you'll find a stand at the top of the escalator. TI hosts the Mystere show (Cirque du Soleil) which is very good. O is even better, which is hosted at the Bellagio. There's also a new Cirque show called Zumanity which has a more adult oriented theme. You'll find that one at NYNY.

Be sure to check the promotions page on the TI website (if you haven't already) and sign up for their mailing list as well. They offer many great mid-week deals. We recently stayed in a Tower room for $55 per night (+ 2 for 1 drinks at Mist and 2 free buffets coupons (yuck!!)). We asked for a view of the Venetian and we got a FANTASTIC view up the strip. We could even see the Bellagio fountains. If you don't request a view, you'll often get stuck with a view of the mall rooftop next door. You can also find some great suite deals on the web. Our last 3 prior stays at TI were either Suites or Petite Suites - both are great.

The standard rooms are very nice as well. You'll find lots of nice luxury soaps, shampoos, conditioner, etc. The room will have a blow dryer (if you need one) and a small safe in the closet.

As for valet, as someone else noted, its free - as it is at all Vegas casinos. One small correction though, you only need to tip ($1 to $2 is the going rate) when you collect your car, not when you drop off.

If you have any further questions, fire away!

Haven't stayed there either but have stayed in New York New York (opposite it) and the Venetian (where we got a up grade to a high roller suite - a long but great story, only to say it was 4 times the size of my house and we had 2 jacuzzies (sp!) our own sauna with a full view of the strip!! - the Bellagio dancing fountains out of one window, the volcanoe going off at the Mirrage out of another window and the mock battle between the two ships out of another window.) We did go in the MGM though and it was HUGE. Although a nice hotel it was not as themed as the hotels we stayed in. But any hotel on the strip in Vegas will be a great place to stay.
Enjoy your trip, we did.
P.S If you enjoy thrill ride type experiences I recommend the indoor skydiving centre located just off the strip opposite Circus Circus. This was one of the best yet wierdest experiences every. You literally float over a huge fan!!

taken their children to one of these hotels and if so how did it work out?

Thanks

We have taken our 2 DS's (13 & 7) several times. The last time we stayed at MGM and Luxor this summer. Had a great time out by the pool at MGM. They have a childcare center there for our younger one - the older one would either be in the arcade or in the room watching movies (he's a very level headed 13 year old). He had a walkie talkie and would check in when he was going somewhere. Wasn't much for them to do at Luxor...

We only take them with us when we are traveling to visit relatives. If we just were going to enjoy L.V. I'd leave them at home with their grandparents. I'm too paranoid to let them do anything on their own, the casinos are too big and there are just too many people for me to be comfortable. Let's face it - we're not talking about Disney here.

vellamint,

I don't have kids so have never taken any to Vegas but the New York, New York had a great Colney Island arcade which was good for kids. It was quite a good size with enough games to occupy kids of all ages for a while.

To answer your question ( a week later!!:o ).....our whole family went out, brothers, sisters and our kids. The kids ages were 8-16. They enjoyed the pool area and the arcade and all the buffets and sightseeing we did.:D Gameworks is an awesome place to take the kids.

A guy I work with went out there for a convention. I told him MGM was huge, a lot of walking, he said he could handle it. He came back and said I was right, it is really huge!

We've stayed at Treasure Island 3 times. I really like that place. It's very easy to get from the strip to the elevators. Many hotels you have to walk a mile to get to the elevators. The hallways aren't real long (not as long as Boardwalk Villas! ;) ). We asked for a pirate ship view twice and got it. It was neat watching it from our room! The other time we asked for a Mirage view and got a great view almost at the top that looked down over the volcano and all the way south down the strip. Haven't been there for over 3 years, I miss it!

DD(26) and I are headed to Vegas in Mar. I got a pretty good price at Caesars for a Tower Room (with jacuzzi). Anyone ever stayed there?

My first trip to Vegas, I was 17, my sister was 9, and my cousin was 8. Us kids were by ourselves a good chunk of the time, and there was PLENTY to do there!

I recommend Excalibur for kids. Their midway "faire" is pretty cool.

Also, Circus Circus has a pretty nice midway with a free circus act several times a day...plus they have their own indoor theme park! :teeth:

ONLY A FEW MORE DAYS 'TIL I GO BACK! VEGAS, BABY, VEGAS!!! :)
