Anyone ever ride Amtrak to Florida?

I have taken the reg train to Orlando w/ the kids. The trip was really long- longer than expected. Our car had no plugs for the dvd players. We were in the last car of the train and I swear they must have been drunk when they laid the tracks. The food was fairly expensive -we didn't do the sitdown dining. The door in the train kept opening during the night -- we kept getting up during the night to shut it. (we were in the first few rows). Our car was rowdy and noisey for a good part of the night till 3 am! On top of that we did check luggage plus the car seats and stroller. Thank goodness DH came w/ us to NY to get us on the train to FL bc I couldn't do it by myself. We had problems with the rental car once getting to Orlando.
Oh the train would stop all the time at night which would wake me up. We started to say we were picking up ghost riders bc we would be in the middle of little town w/ 1 traffic light. We were actually waiting for CSX train to pass - they have the right of way.

The return trip was a bit better. They boarded us by group size in FL -which was good bc we were able to sit all together. A girl scout group shared our car- they got in in GA. Scout leaders were really friendly. We did have the dvd players to use which was much better. A lady traveling w/ her mom. (thinking my mom/grandma ages) complimented us when we got into NY on how well behaved the kids where. They really didn't notice them the entire trip. I did have to chase away a young teenager that kept coming into our car and watching my DN. He kept staring at her. I escorted him back to his parents and told him to not return other wise I would tell the train staff. Oh and on our return my luggage was over the limit so I had to schuffle everything to make the weight limit.

I did 1 more trip by myself from FL to NH. I took my DM down on the autotrain - she was driving out to AZ w/ my Dsis from FL. I went from an unmanned station (lorton) to a manned station (winter Haven or Park- can't remember). The train ended up being 9 hrs delayed at the station. The crew had been on the train too long so they had to change out the crew. The train rain out of water by Jacksonville. The train smelled horrible. By the time I was in NJ I was in tears w/ DH on the phone- not sure if I would get my connection to NH. Since soo many people were in need of that connection they held the next train so we could board.

Now granted these are a handfull of things that all lead to the problems we had. I still won't take the train that far. Now you are a bit closer than I so it might be different. I do the reg train to boston by myself w/ the kids a few times a year and plan on heading to DC for a mini vacation. I just find that with our famiy size the autotrain works better bc there is no car seat lugging- checking weight of the luggage. If I had to take it again I would be better prepared-- back a cooler - drinks/filling food vs just snacks. Not picking the last car on the train.LOL

I know many people do travel by the reg train. We just find the reg autotrain is more our speed. If you are not looking into driving than I guess the reg train could work.-- Just make sure you are prepared. maybe I wasn't that first trip. If you are connecting the train in DC it may not be soo bad. But then you are on the train for over 30 hours. ours was 24 and that was LONG. would renting a vehicle to hold everyone work?? I know more of an expense. Plus remember when you get to Orlando you do have to find your way to WDW. So that may be an added expense too. Also getting back to the station too.

I hope this was helpful.

Thanks

maybe we should just fly

I just wanted to say that we did Southwest and Jetblue because the first 2 bags are free on SW PER PERSON and the first bag is free on Jetblue ---also per person. Then we did Magical express which was free --so no rental car and no need to worry about paying to put gas in your car-- AND Disney gets your luggage for you so no need to go to baggage claim:thumbsup2. Just bring what you might need for 3-4 hours until your bags arrive. Like I said there was nothing wrong with the train when we took it. It's just if I can travel 2 hours instead of 17 and not have to drive at the end of the trip I would pay a little extra to fly if I had to....but just a little:rolleyes1......so far though everytime I have priced it the train was always more:confused3

:rotfl:Loritlc3-- good luck with your decision. It is a tough one. if you can get airfare fairly decent than flying would be better. DME I heard is good.

For us right now since we do the train for free it makes sense to us. We haven't flown since pre 9/11-actually exactly a year prior we were in Disney. It's not 9/11 that keeps us from flying. We got caught up in raising our family to realize that we hadn't vacation in 4 yrs or so. At that time DH started working at Amtrak so the autotrain was our choice. Someday we will fly - when we don't need soo much gear with us. We are DVCer's so we like to bring the comforts of home with us. :rotfl: Though I do miss the days of getting up at 5 am and being in Orlando by 11 am.(someday again)

Sometimes like parker218 stated - it pays to pay a bit more to get there faster.

Again - good luck with your decision. Let us know what u decide

Thanks

maybe we should just fly

lol its really not bad.. and this is coming from someone who hit a huge delay on the auto train and had my return train canceled.

We are considering it again for August :thumbsup2

In July 2009 my family rode coach on the AutoTrain. The food was decent, and we were happy not to have to drive, but it's not something I will do again. The seats aren't comfortable and some of the other people in coach were irritating. We won't be doing it again.

If the cost is almost the same as flying, I would definitely fly instead. Or even drive.

Hi Loritlc3,

I'm from Pittsburgh too! DBF and I just took the trip from Pittsburgh to Orlando (through DC) last October since he refuses to fly. Neither one of us had been on the train before. I did huge amounts of research before and after we booked. We also didn't need a car as his sister picked us up in Orlando so we didn't consider the autotrain at that time. We had a roommette from Pit-DC and a bedroom DC-Orlando. It was expensive, but being our first time we wanted to have some more space and didn't know what to expect in coach. We actually really liked the train. The food was very good (it's free when you have sleeper accomodations) and the other passengers we sat with in the dining car were very nice. We are going to Florida again both this year and in 2011 (not Disney though :sad1:) but are going to take the autotrain for those trips, but are going to be in a roomette because of the cost (personally I'd prefer the bedroom to the roommette). We didn't like the extremly long layover in DC. With sleeper accomodations we did have access to the Acela club in Union Station, but it was a very long wait. On the ride down we did spend some time in the Smithsonians, but on the way back DBF insisted on renting a car and driving home because he didn't want to waste a day sitting there (train got in at 7:30ish a.m. and we weren't scheduled to leave until 4:00ish p.m. and wouldn't get to Pittsburgh until 11:30ish pm) and we were home in a little under 4 hours if I remember right. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. I found the following sites to be extremely helpful, especially the first one:

Sorry for the long post!

p.s. if it weren't for my DBF refusing to fly, I'd fly to Disney. If you are staying onsite you can take the Magical Express to your resort at no additional cost. They also take you back to the airport. With the train you'd have to get a taxi (readily available at the station and the resort) or a car service.

We took Amtrak from NC to Florida. It was horrible! We will never take a train to go anywhere again. We wound up arriving about 6 hours later than we were supposed to. We had our 2 year old with us and it was probably the most stressed I have ever been as a parent.

WOW!!!!:scared1:

A lot of mixed reviews on this thread....
ME and the DH and DD9 DD10 And DD6 are taking the Silver Star from NYC to Orlando... Non stop. We get back March 8th So I will tell you how our trip went... I have a child with Autism so Im sure this will be an adventure for us because she is quite set in her ways. we will be leaving the 28th and comming back March 8th :)

Well loritlc, I think I'm rethinking the autotrain for our next trip after reading this thread. My DH hates flying though. I have awhile to decide though.

I just booked our 3rd trip on the Autotrain for September. We really enjoy it as a family. The kids 8 and 6 really do like it. We have been fortunate enough to not have any problems. We've always arrived early to both destinations. I would not hesitate to book for the autotrain. Also, I learned this the first time we took Amtrak..the restrooms are downstairs. They have the regular bathroom and then the handicap bathrooms. The handicap restrooms were a whole lot bigger and suited us for changing into our pj's.

If you have any questions, just ask.

I'd price out flights from nearby airports even. I'm near DC and Baltimore, and from BWI we can frequently get very low airfares (Southwest, or also Airtran looked very cheap from DCA). Even if you have to drive a couple of hours, it may save time to just fly.

Just a suggestion...

I am in Pittsburgh as well! My son is medically unable to fly so we have to take the train. I agree that the sleepers are more expensive but I dont think I could do it without. Its best to book through Philadelphia to avoid the long layovers in DC. We will be leaving at 7 am arriving in Philly at 3pm. Next train is scheduled to leave at 5 pm arriving in Orlando at 1 pm the next day. We have family in Philly so I will have lunch with them to kill some of the layover time. I took this trip once many years ago when I was a college programmer returning home. I was in coach and dont recall it being so bad. This time with my DS 7 and I the sleeper will be good for us. I will bring a portable DVD player and his Nintendo DS and a few toys. I will bring my Droid cellphone which has awesome internet, some crosswords and a few books. I think trips like this are what you make of them. Im a single mom and I NEVER get a chance to spend extensive quality time with my son so I am going to cherish every moment. We will be in the World for 12 days 11 nights and a little train delay is not going to get my vacation off to a bad start. Good luck making your decision!
