Anyone ever have a baby who does this?

Now, I am not sure the best way to describe these "spells", so I'll just do the best I can. I never had any of my other kids do this, so I wonder if anyone else will recognize my odd description. Olivia goes to the doctor Monday, so I'll ask him then, assuming I can figure out how to describe them!

Anyway, Olivia has these "spells" where she will all of a sudden start to cry hard, like something is hurting her. She then will suddenly stop, swallow hard, take a gaspy breath and start crying again (almost like she had something in her throat that hurt her). She will do this for about ten minutes and then she will finally stop crying, but she will do "hiccuppy" type breathing where she takes "double breaths". And when you have your hand on her chest, you can feel "rattles" with your hand.

Now, it isn't when she is eating or when she just wakes up. This can happen anytime, just out of the blue. This started about two months ago and she does it 1-2x a week. She wasn't "colicky" as a baby. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I know, my description stinks! LOL!!

Well... Whenever my DD cried hard she had what I call the "breathing problems" the hiccupy thing. We just found out that she still does that when she cries hard (she is 6) she just does not cry hard very often now.

How old is your baby? My DD is my oldest and she could cry seemingly out of the blue and I could not console her with the normal, diaper change, feeding or rocking. With DS I have figured out all his cries so he didn't need to work so hard to communicate his discomfort with me.

Maybe you could figure out the pattern by writing all the circumstances surrounding it?

I have definately seen it. In both my girls. When they are startled or have fallen. The cry hiccupy thing happens and takes a good 10 minutes to stop.

That cry always makes everyone frantic and on edge:sad:

Ask your doctor and have the baby checked out anyway. You never no when its an ear infection or throat ache.

It sounds like really bad gas pains to me, but I'm not expert. However, my dd suffered from them when she was a baby and we had to give her something all the time. Can't remember the name of it though. Hope you find out something at the doc.

It almost sounds like reflux, Ellie does a lot of the same type of things and it was reflux.

Good luck!

My thought was reflux too, which can also trigger asthma like breathing. DD2 had it really badly - I can post some of the other symptoms. She would fuss like she was really hungry, but then shortly after starting to eat she would not want to eat (this also was true when teething). She would be resting or playing happily and then start crying hard suddenly. If we could get her to take a pacifier it helped, but after the diagnosis we learned that was because it triggered swallowing which pushed the acid back down. The biggest key was how much and what she spit up. Sometimes it wasn't a large quantity, but it was very smelly. If any of these sound familiar let me know, I can go on. After months of trying all kinds of things we finally got an RX for Prilosec which they made at the formulary pharmacy (grind it into a suspension) and that solved it almost instantly. She did outgrow it for the most part, but every now and again in the growing process she has spells where things aren't right and we have to put her back on meds.

My son use to go thru this all the time , The older he is getting the less it happens, he is 2 1/2 now. For him it is acid reflux. Which is when acid comes up the throat and feels like your throat is burning. I have had this happen to myself also (i don't know if its hereditary or not). It is a terrible feeling almost like you can't catch your breath and your throat burns, the burning last for a while even after the acid has gone down. My son was on meds for a while . I hope your daughter gets well soon and you get the answers you need. It is so hard to see your children in pain and you don't know how to help them.

Acid reflux makes a lot of sense now that you guys mention it. At her 5 month checkup, She was doing a lot of spitting up and the doctor mentioned that as a possibility at the time. He reccommended thickening her formula with cereal. The spitting up has lessened, but I will mention that to the doctor. Thanks for your ideas.
