i got a great deal on pre package lunch meat. I bouth way more than i can use at this time. I was thinking about freezing it. Have you done this? dose it still taste the same? :thumbsup2

Yeah! I've frozen ham and bologna and turkey before, it tastes fine, a tip from the deli attendant is to wrap the meat in paper towels when you take it out of the freezer so that it doesn't get too slimmy too soon!

I do it all the time. I buy it when it is on sale and have it wrapped in 1lb packages and freeze them. Never have had a problem and I have it very thinly shaved.

We just ate (and gave away) the last of our Oscar Mayer turkey bologna, turkey ham and turkey hot dogs from our deep freeze that I bought in February and March. Tastes just as good as the day we bought it.
Didn't do anything special with it to freeze or thaw, it was packed tightly in the round packages, a looser packed product might have "slimey" issues when thawing.

I freeze lunchmeat, no problem. I buy roast beef and turkey at Sams Club (in packages), and then put them in Rubbermaid and put it in the freezer in smaller portions. I don't freeze for long, a week or two at most.

I also freeze lunch meat and cheeses too. Everything thaws fine and tastes good.

Just toss it in the freezer and to use, thaw as you would any other meat, either setting out for a while or put in fridge day before you want to use it! It's a great way to save and pick up a bargain!

I always freeze sandwhich meats until we are ready to eat them

We also freeze pre-packaged sandwich meat. It is certainly nicer to buy on sale in bulk than to by when it is more expensive.

Just wanted to add a safety warning here. You should never thaw meat by letting it sit out. You should only thaw it in the fridge (or in the microwave if you are in a hurry). Sitting out unrefrigerated allows harmful bacteria to grow.

How long does the meat last, after it thaws? I'm considering taking some stuff for sandwiches on our trip in July. We'll be spending part of our trip at the beach. We don't like to go out for lunch, when we're bumming on the beach. Anyway, Winn Dixie has prepackaged sandwich meat BOGO. I was just thinking it was a shame they didnt wait a couple months for that offer. :teeth: Thanks to this thread, I may go ahead & get some to freeze. :thumbsup2 Will it last an entire week in a cooler w/ ice, of course?

I'm glad to hear that no one has had any problems. We do this all the time and I thought with everyone reading/posting, there might be some no so good stories.

I've never frozen cheese. Does it taste the same and come off in slices after it thaws?

Sometimes, instead of freezing the meat, I'll make sandwiches and freeze them. A couple loaves of bread, a couple pounds of lunch meat and a ton of ziplocs, and my DH has sandwiches for a long time. He just takes them out in the morning, tosses them in a lunchbox with an ice pack and they are ready to eat at lunchtime. :thumbsup2

I personally wouldn't put meat in a cooler with ice for a week, probably not more than overnight.

In the fridge, I usually have it for 5 days or so before tossing.

You're probably right. :) I've never tried it before. I supposed I'll need to come up with a Plan B.

I would think that it should be fine if it's kept cold the whole time.

Before we go camping, I freeze everything that can easily be frozen before the trip so that I have plenty of cold stuff in the ice chest. I always freeze the lunch meat and then I put each package into a separate zipper bag. And for the ice chest, I use the name brand zipper bags because they seal better.

I've successfully kept lunchmeat in a cooler for a week. Maybe to insure it's freshness, you could bring extra plastic baggies to changeout every day or so?
