My husband and I are looking to buy a new couch. Macy's has a couch that we like but it's velvet. I am a little iffy about purchasing a velvet couch. I've never had one and neither has anyone that I know.

Has anyone out there in the great wide world of the Dis ever owned a velvet couch.

Specifically we are looking at the Remo Velvet Couch. It has great reviews on Macys.com, but you guys know how it is; you would rather hear first hand about something rather than just go buy some online reviews.

Oh, and by the way. This will be our first couch purchase. Any couch buying tips would be much appreciated. :thumbsup2

If you have animals don't buy velvet. Animal hair is drawn to it like a magnet! I had a velvet chair--it always looked horrible no matter how much I vacuumed or lint rollered it.

Yes, my ex-roommate had a beautiful, red velvet couch. I loved it.   It looked very rich, sumptuous and elegant. I'd have one of my own, but I have a cat now. As someone else said, it would be a giant lint brush. :(

Inquiring minds want to know, what kind of fabric doesn't show dog hair other than leather?

I'm couch shopping and have just resigned myself to dog hair.

If I had a pet I might just buy a couch that was the same color family as the pet's fur. :thumbsup2

Before we got our leather furniture (best with dogs and kids!!) we had microfiber from La-z-boy. It held up well (until Hurricane Katrina), was easy to clean (even baby puke!) and dog hair could be brushed right off.

I intended on getting a black cat as I wear so much black. This way, what cat hair I couldn't get off wouldn't show as much. It ended up not working that way. I have a mixed calico/ bengal/ tabby with a white bib & tummy. She every color an animal can have. :upsidedow But, this is the kitty that won my heart.

As a general couch buying tip, buy one with removable cushions. Some couch backs are fully upholstered and harder to clean because of it. If you get one with removable cushions and you spill coffee on it, you can remove the cover to clean it easier or flip it to the back side.

A denim couch is fairly pet hair proof. I think the Cindy Crawford collection has one.

Sadly my dogs are dark and light. Very poor planning on my part. :sad1:

What type of microfiber? I had no idea but there is velvet, suede, leather, twill etc.

That's a good tip. Thanks!

I looked a denim couch last night and thought it looked pretty indestructible. Sadly that is little too casual for my living room.

These are all great tips. Microfibre is our first choice for fabric however the couch at Macy's that we like only comes comes in velvet.
