Anyone ever break their tailbone?

I fell down our basement stairs on Monday. The doctor finally called me today with the x-ray results and I have a broken tailbone. He was so vague on recovery time - 4 weeks to 6 months! YIKES!

Does anyone have any advice or experience with this problem?

My mom broke hers giving birth to me...So I guess I broke it...All I know about that one is that she sat on a rubber doughnut for a longtime.

One of my cheerleading teammates broke hers though, and she had the same basic thing. Doughnut. That thing was her best friend for a while! It does have a long recovery time.

Hate to tell you this but it is something that will probably bother you for the rest of your life. I broke mine a few years ago and I still have problems with it.

I also fell down the basement stairs many years ago doing the same thing. It took ages...like, perhaps a year before it didn't hurt at all? Get the 'donut' and you'll learn to sit a little more forward than usual :rolleyes1

ITA! I broke mine when I was 12 and I'm 41 now and it still bothers me. I'm so sorry!

yep, about 3-4 years ago I broke it on a waterslide at a water park (not Disney)- still have problems. Ouch!

All I can say is Good Luck :confused3 It's going to be a long while... I think everyone is different. I fell down a flight of stairs as well (over the cat) & it took about a year before I felt no pain. Thankfully after that year, I had no further problem... but the first few months were pretty bad pain wise :( I'm sorry....

i have broken my tailbone more than once. all of my breaks happened between 12-18. i'll be 27 in a few weeks and it still bothers me on occassion. i know how much it hurts!

Thanks for your replies, even though they weren't very encouraging! I'm 35 and in good shape. My red rubber doughnut pillow goes everywhere with me! The worst thing is my body just got used to working out 5 times a week (cardio, weights, yoga, etc.) and I feel like I'm atrophying!

I'm just thankful for benefiber and vicodin . . .

I broke mine twice roller skating. Now I stay off them. Had to sit on a foam donut and took some medication for the inflamation. It was hard to sleep on my back for a while.

Yes, I broke mine once, I feel down the stairs at work. that was when I was 18, by 19 I developed a pianidal(sp) cyst and got that operated on, took at least a year to feel myself again and be able to sit comfortably. You'll feel better but it does take time. :sunny:

I broke mine falling down the Carpeted stairs when DD was a baby. She is now 18. I can't say mine really bothers me anymore. But sure hurt for a long time after I did it. Every time I would sit on the floor to change her diaper and lean back.... ooooh. that was awful. Nothing you can do for it unfortunately. Time.

Good luck.
