Is a cool place to visit and spend a night? Is there enough to do, especially during October? We were thinking about visiting that area for a couple of days?

Cool place to go.... without young kids.

hmm...like the time my uncle took me to the wax museum and jumped out at me while we were in the dungeons?'

yeah - way to scar a kid for life Uncle Bobby!

But really - it's fun and, dare I saw, educational. If you plan on staying in the area - call ASAP for reservations at a hotel...it gets quite crowded up there during October...lots-o-nutsos out too...but it's all in good fun!

I lived there for a year, back in my young, sassy days. It's a lot of fun just about any time, but even more so during halloween.
I always thought there was plenty to do even with kids, as long as they were old enough to understand the difference between the "Hocus Pocus" witches, and the poor women who were burned long ago.

I recommend taking a tour, seeing the Peabody Essex Museum, and of course, some of the tourist traps. The town was actually a site of great international commerce long ago, and there are many old sea captain's homes, and maritime attractions.

And don't forget to go to the Willows!! Its just a short drive from Pickering Wharf and your kids will love it!

I've been and enjoyed it very much. It's extremely crowded during October with all of the festivities during the weekends. When we went, we had to drive around for about an hour just to find a spot to park. Very neat, though. There is a lot to do. Here's a website that will give you an idea of what there is to see: http://www.hauntedhappenings.org/ .

We've been 3 times. All without the kids. We stood at the Hawthorn hotel, beautiful! We love it there. The town is so pretty, lots of nice houses to look at. We took a trolley tour, went to the museums and such. We did go twice during the Halloween season and had such a great time. We are actually dying to go back.

I loved it there. I also went in the fall and the colors were beautiful. We did the touristy things - witch museum, etc., but I found the most fun just walking through the town and drinking in all the "witchiness". The little shops are great fun - potions and such. And then we went to some little bar and I was even entertained in the bathroom - there was grafitti all over, and just about all of it was "witch" related.;)

If you go, don't forget to see the House of Seven Gables. It's the house that Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about. I love old houses, and thought it was a fascinating tour!

If you go in October, expect it to be very CROWDED. But there's lots going on, and it's a great time to go.

My mother & 2 brothers still live in Salem

My wedding reception (back in 1981) was at the Hawthorne Hotel - married in Marblehead

We went in November, we did a day trip up from Boston and checked out the witch muesum. We also took in a little bit of the town.

Very pretty around that early november time with lots of leaves on the ground.
