Anyone ever been an adult camp counselor

at a sleepaway camp?
I am hoping to get hired this summer for 8 weeks as a certified teacher. All the camps I am applying at, offer tutoring as an extra service and charge.
I am wondering if my children will be able to go free or at a reduced cost and if teachers have their own cabin/rooms?
I know they are treated a bit different than other counselors.
The salary is pretty good, considering its a summer supplement, opportunity for a change of place plus room and board.

I was a camp counselor a few years ago and I know a lot of the people who worked there who had kids were able to bring their kids along for free. I think it is very much camp dependant.

I was not an "adult" counselor (well, I was 21 ) but I was friends with one which I guess would fall into that category. She was the head of the art dept. though - what position are you applying for? She shared a cabin with other adult counselors - but they were all heads of depts - and her kids went to camp for free. If you get hired as a certified teacher I would guess that means you are not in charge of a cabin so you would bunk with other adults or have your own room in an adult cabin. It really depends on the camp.

I'm sure it depends on the camp, but a good friend of mine did this last summer. She was the guidance counselor so she didn't have to stay in a cabin. Her oldest child went to camp for free. Her younger child was not old enough to attend the camp, so the child lived with her in her little studio 'apartment' and then was cared for during the day by a babysitter who also handled a few other kids that were too young to officially attend and live in the cabins.

Depends on the camp. I have volunteered as a counselor for over 10 years in one week increments. If I had children at the time they would have gotten discounted tuition to camp. At our camp, the counselor sleeps on the screen porch of the cabin with the kids inside. You have your own space, but at our camp you're "on" 24 hours a day. If a camper needs me, she knows I'm right there.

The paid staff are mostly college-aged folks and are there all summer. They live in their own cabins, usually with a roommate or 3.

Space Camp had all adult counselors when I was attending. I don't think many of them were teachers and some of the counselors were year round staff. I don't think they got discounts though and its definitely not a cheap camp to attend.

My niece did a 6 week stint last summer as a RN at a rich kid's camp in Wisconsin. (Seriously, it was like $1100 per week to attend. ) She had her own "cabin" which was basically a 3 room apartment. She has a toddler, and they paid to provide a nanny for him at the camp.

I'd say it's going to depend on the position you're applying for and how in demand it is.

It depends on the camp. I work at a non-profit and if you are a regular counselor then you can bring campers at a reduced rate and you only get free "camperships" if you are the director or the nurse.
