Anyone ever add on to their house?

I would really like to look at adding on a 400 (14 x 28) sq ft. master bedroom/bathroom addition next year and I am trying to do some estimating on costs.

We live in a rural area and will probably have the Amish do it, so it would likely be somewhat cheaper than a contractor. Has anyone else added on and what kind of cost estimate do you figure.

Kristy, we just completed a master bedroom/bathroom with a family room addition underneath. I think they say to estimate approximately $100 per square foot.

We added on a 24'x24' family room back in '87. We hired a contractor to "rough it in" and we did the rest (drywall, electrical, stone wall/hearth for the woodstove, etc.) ourselves to save money. We have a bay-style entrance with french doors, and a bay window. Plus we put on a huge 3-level deck, had the whole house sided in vinyl siding (it had been old yellow crumbling brick) and we put new carpet in the office (old family room), dining room, bathroom and new congoleum in the kitchen. I "think" we borrowed $30,000 from the bank and had 10 years to pay it off. The money also furnished the family room with furniture.

We've added on twice, Kristy. First time we filled in half our porch and made it into a bedroom. The other time we added two rooms (bedroom and family room) to the back of the house.

Dh did all the additions which saved us a ton of money!! :D

We're about to add an attached garage with a great room above it (About 26x30).
We just got our closing date on the home equity loan, and we're waiting to hear the price from the contractor.
We're hoping for anything less than $50k. I have no idea if that's possible.

We are almost finished with ours 15X25 and we are in the 55K area, but thats everything (roof, extra siding, carpeting, tile, furniture) The $100 per sq estimate is usually way off.

Add on only if you plan on staying in the same home for a very long time. Even if your home doubles in value compared to the others in the neighborhood, when sold the value isn't usually a whole lot more then the other proporties in your area. You may not get the investment you put in it back in profit.
