We are going to WDW Oct. 13-20 for 8 days with our 6 year old twins and 8 mo. old son. I am worried about bringing the baby on the airplane and exposing him to the swine flu possibly. Is anyone else getting worried about going on a plane and to Disney with this new flu? I might cancel the vacation if it seems to get worse. Any opinions? Thanks, Linda

I understand your concern, but if your twins are in school, they are just as likely to bring the flu home with them and expose the family as you are to catch it on the plane.

Everyone has to make the decision that is right for his or her family, but the flu is everywhere. You are just as likely to catch it in your hometown as you are at Disney World. Of course, if you catch it at home, it won't ruin your vacation!

I hope you are able to make a decision that is comfortable for you.

If you fly, you will be exposed. This is what my pediatrician told me today.

If your twins get it at home, you at least have a chance (albeit small) of keeping the baby away. My neighbor's child just got the flu and the pediatrician recommended sending the baby to his grandparents for a few days.

School has been in session for a few weeks here and kids are dropping like flies. My big fear isn't the flu itself (because for most kids it has been mild) but just feeling bad on vacation.

I would contact your pediatrician. I had a checkup with my son today and he got his regular flu shot. She said that all children under 17 will be required to have the swine (H1N1) flu shot and it should be available in early October. My son is 2 and we are concerned, but with any situation practice good hygiend and use use use hand sanitizer. I keep on on the stroller, the diaper bag and wash our hands everywhere we go.

I also take portable clorox wipes and clean toilets before I use them. This will be first trip my DS now 2 will be going potty as well, so I will be extra careful.

An extra 30 seconds of prep in the bathroom could save you heartache in the longrun.

I would be lying if I said it does not concern me. My DH travels for business constantly...domestic and international...he is of the opinion that he could bring it home to all of us...so us getting on a plane for our WDW vacation...not any more risky. I will take every precaution, i.e. sanitizer, wipes, etc...to keep us healthy. As pp's said...it is everywhere...but I too worry about contracting it on our vacation.

I just few last weekend with my 4 month old and we both are fine. I did think about it but all I could do was pray that we would stay healthy.

I was talking about this last night with my hubby. We are going Oct31-Nov7 with our (then) 5 month old. The ped already told us to be sure we got regular flu shots since little bit can't. I teach preschool, so germs are abundant. (No matter how diligent I am with cleaning, hand washing, sanitizing, etc...) We wont be flying, but being there in general makes me a little nervous. I guess we'll see how the spreading of it goes, how the vaccine goes (though new vaccines make me just as nervous!) and go from there. See what the ped says although I'm thinking she's gonna say.... why risk getting sick, can't ya wait until he's a little older......

Personally, I would post-pone until you can get vaccinated. Not worth it with a baby, in my opinion. Yes the kids could bring it home, but you have more control of the situation at home than on vacation. You can keep anyone who is sick in one area of the house, always be near a sink to wash hands, etc..

I am very nervous about the flu because I am pregnant and due in 3 weeks. My dd just started kindergarten and I am praying she doesn't bring it home. What will I do if she does? I can't leave my sick child and stay with my parents... or is that the more responsible thing to do? Tough to say.

We'll be taking our 3 mo old in November. I'm a little nervous about it, but she'll also be in daycare by that time and probably more likely to get it there. I was planning on only breastfeeding her while on maternity leave but I'm going to continue it for a while to (hopefully) give her a little extra immunity.

Swine flu has been especially devastating to pregnant women. If I were in your shoes i think I'd let my DH care for my sick son (in my case). It would be a tough decision, but your unborn child's life (as well as your own) could be at stake. Not to mention, your DH could end up caring for a sick daughter AND a sick/preggo wife otherwise. :scared1:

Wow! I work at a hospital and we are getting prepared for H1N1. However, lets keep in mind and airplane is NOT the only place you can get H1N1....school, grocery store, church, pediatricians office...etc. Just educate yourself on prevention techniques (handwashing, personal space, etc.) and speak up if you notice someone sick getting on the airplane. There was a woman who threw up on our flight last year just after we had boarded. I did not want her sitting anywhere near us (she was not pregnant btw) - I said something to the FA and was surprised she was allowed to fly, but she wasn't sitting near us.

Take the advice of those you trust (you don't need to take mine), but don't stop living your life!

DON"T CANCEL OVER THIS!!!! The baby can pick up germs from anywhere whether ot os swine flu or reg flu

We leave for 10 days at WDW in 25 days. I'm actually more worried about my kids getting sick during the week before we go than while we are there. However, I haven't heard of any reported cases of swine flu in either of their schools and only a couple in our county, so I'm trying not to borrow trouble.

So true. I'm 9 weeks pg and I don't think I will rest easy until I have the vaccine. My 2 yr old DD developed a fever last week just before bedtime. I get nervous with fevers because she had a febrile seizure. I didn't want her sleeping alone in case the fever spiked but didn't want to share a bed with her in case she was truly sick. I slept on the couch and DH slept with DD in our bed. It killed me not to be there for her, but my logic was DH is plenty capable of taking care of DD but I am the only one who can protect our unborn child at this point. Thankfully, it was nothing and she was fine the next day. Swine flu has me nuts though and I am sure it's only because I'm pg.

Vaccinations in our state, CT start in September for both H1N1 and the regular flu vaccine. Our doctor said he'd vaccinate our DDs 4 and 6 and my DH and I as early this month as he could- so we'd be protected while on vacation.

We will be flying to WDW in October with an 8 week old baby. I consulted several times with both my OB/Gyn and our family pediatrician. Both said flying should be no more dangerous than going to the grocery store or sending your kids to school. Yes, germs can be airborne- but a school bus ride, or standing in line at the store are no different than flying. The flu doesn't just hang out in airplanes.

After seeing that our doctors were not worried- I try to relax. But I can't say that I am not worried!
I'll be a hand washing fool- sanitizing what I can. I will hope and pray for the best- but we can't live in a bubble.

I'm not concerned, but we're not traveling until January and by then our little one (13 mo) will almost certainly have been exposed via our two school-aged kids. I don't plan on getting the vaccine unless the severity of the situation changes, and given that private schools in our area are already experiencing larger than usual numbers of sick kids (public don't start until tomorrow), I expect the kids will be exposed well before the vaccine is available anyway.

This is the 1st year I will get my kiddies the flu vaccine. DD 7 had the flu last year, as did DH. Not a pretty sight!! DD 18 mos at the time, and I did not get it. Flying is not my biggest issue, but the number of people that we will come into contact with in the "world". I will also gladly accept an H1N1 vaccine if available.

We will be flying in October with DD who will be just shy of 4 months old when we travel. I actually am more concerned with us catching the flu from DH who is a teacher (I am also a teacher, but I am home for the year with DS and DD). DH and DS will get the regular flu shot and I may too. We will be driving to Disney at Christmas, so the air travel won't be an issue at that point. I wouldn't cancel the trip considering the flu germs will be everywhere, not just on an airplane. We are still unsure about the swine flu vaccine at this point and we will see how that strain of the flu progresses.
