Well, you certainly can't accuse them of wimping-out like The Sopranos did . . . ;)

I wonder if there's going to be anyone left by the end of this final season?

I was really shocked they killed off Minister Said. .

I'm one of the minorities that does not have HBO. What are you talking about and did I miss anything?;)

Another brillant HBO show! I don't get to see every episode. They should make kids in high school watch it. If it doesn't convince them crime doesn't pay nothing will.

Hello... We just started getting HBO this past 6 months. I began to catch episodes of O* every so often. It is horridly violent. That being said, I found myself drawn into the story completely and quickly. The acting, writing, and directing of this show is completely ama*ing. I found myself enveloped by its intense, outpouring of emotion by a talented male cast. I admit that sometimes I have to grab the remote and QUICK CLICK during some gut wrenching scenes. I was mortified by the incident with the spoon. My stomach still churns when I think of it. After I first saw that episode, I woke my dh up and proceded to sob at mans inhumanity.

I agree that High School kids may learn from the show. It could be a wonderful springboard for MANY discussions and debates with young people.

Dh and I love OZ, been watching since the first season! (unfortunately this season is the last...) I love Keller...

I missed the first few minutes...but was shocked when they were talking about Said in the past tense! I thought I had learned from the first season - "don't get used to these characters - they don't last long..."

I'm an occasional Oz viewer and think it is really good. I didn't know the minister got whacked.

"OZ" is a prison drama Shannon that is very realistic, brutal, and as Mamajoan says, amazingly acted and written. . . if you can handle the violence it's a very compelling and great show. . .

Yeah Micca, some old man posing as a reporter came in and blew him away. . . plus Beecher was paroled, although he's handling Keller's case as a lawyer and is still on the show. . .

I wonder if Shillenger is next????

Watching Oz always leaves me feeling totally drained! I tried watching Law &Order:SVU, but couldn't get used to seeing the Oz "bad guys" (VERY bad guys!) play other roles. The acting on Oz is incredible. I'm still mourning the end of "Homicide" and don't know what I'll do without Oz.

I saw my first episode the other night…very interesting…some judge or mayor had his throat slashed in the hospital ward. Are there little musical spots in all of the episodes or were they just in the one I saw the other night?

They always have someone (usually Agustus, the guy in the wheelchair) doing little philosphocal scenes that kind of set the tone for the episodes and introduce characters Charlie..

Some times they are kind of cool, but mostly I think they're irritating. . LOL!! ;)

Thanks Willy...hey I was just clicking around the www.hbo.com site and saw this...interesting..

USA TODAY
"The inside story on HBO's 'Oz'. True to form, its final season won't be pretty, either." By Gary Levin
--------------------------------------------------
Most viewers who think of HBO think of The Sopranos, cable's top-rated series. But before Tony and Carmela came along, there was Oz, a brutal prison drama that premiered in 1997 and was the network's first continuing drama.

Though less popular, it has The Sopranos beat in the body-count department, having killed off 50 characters from its huge cast in its first six seasons. But there are more to come as the show begins its seventh and final batch of eight episodes Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. In them, a few departed inmates even return from beyond the grave as on-screen narrators.

Mention Oz to those who have seen it and many will squirm at its soap-operatic tales of scheming, divided loyalties and unfortunate consequences, namely shankings, rapes and beatings. (It has been dubbed Melrose Prison.) But writer/producer Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Street) says he "didn't want to entertain people."

"That's never really been my goal in any of the shows I've ever done. If you're going to do a show about prison, you can't do a show that people will be comfortable watching. If I've made people uncomfortable, I've succeeded."

Take Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergesen). A lawyer convicted of killing a girl while driving drunk, he is sent to Oswald Correctional Facility, a high-tech experimental prison. There, he's raped, becomes a junkie, has his limbs broken and learns that his son has been kidnapped and murdered and his wife has committed suicide. And Sunday's opener sees another tragedy.

"It's not for the faint of heart," says Dean Winters, who has played Irish instigator Ryan O'Reily since the series began. "I've sat there with my mom when she watched it and seen her cry."

Fontana concedes that Oz's appeal is narrower than the frolicsome Sex and the City, which may have limited its ratings — nearly 4 million viewers for its Sunday premieres last season — and awards contention. Unlike its HBO peers, Oz has never won an Emmy.

"I'd like to think years from now that people will see past the surface shock of it and see hopefully the deeper truths we've been dealing with," Fontana says. "The struggle to survive on a day-to-day basis, whether you're in prison or facing Saddam. There is a faceless population in the U.S. that deserves more recognition and attention than it gets by most of us on the outside."

Winters adds: "It lets you know there's a part of society out there that you don't want any contact with, that you don't want to set foot in that building."

The actor credits Fontana with creating a family atmosphere despite its subject matter. Two other Winters brothers are involved in the show: Scott plays Cyril O'Reily, Ryan's brother who is now on death row, and Brad is a staff writer.

Joining the cast for the final season are Fontana's cousin Patti LuPone, who plays the new jail librarian, and, in a two-episode guest stint, Joel Grey as a murderer.

Oz's HBO run comes to an end in late February with a 110-minute finale: "There is cataclysm, and there is also redemption," says Fontana, who aimed to tie up some loose ends and start others to show that life in Oz continues, even if the series doesn't.

The show faced cancellation two years ago when Fontana lost his studio lease in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, leading him to write a cliffhanger finale in which the prison's cafeteria exploded.

He found new space in Bayonne, N.J., and wrote an episode in which the prison was rebuilt. But he says it's time to call it quits after this season. "I'm not sure I have (another) season in me," he says. "I decided it was time. It's one of those things where you don't want to stay too long at the dance."

Now he's turning his attention to new projects: a series called Baseball Wives, in development at HBO, and a courtroom drama developed with HBO for ABC that takes the jurors' point of view.

And for a possible feature film, Fontana is writing a script about a real-life Stanford University experiment in which college students volunteered to live in a prison.

"Instead of writing about Oz, where everybody is bad, this is about people who are good becoming bad," he says. "It's like the opposite story."

Hey I love the show OZ and have been a faithful viewer since it started a few years back. They currently film the series at the old Military Ocean Terminal in my hometown.
I once saw the prison bus from the opening credits at my mechanics getting new tires put on

This is an amazing show. The storylines and acting are just incredible and the harsh reality of prison life is at first, shocking, but then you come to the sad realization, that is how it is. :(

I didn't realize that Ryan and Cyril were really brothers. Both of them are exceptional in their roles.

I missed Friday's and can't believe they killed off Said. He was a complex character but a stabilizing influence and I can't see who can take on that role, but I guess this is why it is the last season. :(

I have been watching Oz since the very beginning, since a family friend plays one of the main characters, so of course I am hooked. It's difficult to get people to understand that it is more like a soap opera that anything else......

I was also wondering who will be next to be killed, or who will even be left at the end of the season!

I like to read the recaps at Television Without Pity to get another point of view.

I was really shocked they killed off Said too Cathy. . definitely came out of nowhere!!!

Pluss it looks like they are going to fry Cyrill. . . the prison officials were worried he was too crazy to execute without getting a bunch of bad press, so they are giving him electro-shock treatments. .

As Ryan points out on the show; "Seems messed up; they are giving him shock treaments to make him sane enough to put in the electric chair. . "

If you watch the show you do care about the characters, which shows how well done it is. .

Joanne, which character does your friend play? :)

Lee Turgesen, who plays Tobias Beecher. He is my BIL's best friend from high school.

Imagine our trying to explain to MIL when she saw the first episode, tatoo scene and all. Actually, I thought it was pretty funny watching the family spin doctors at work. Poor Mom! She hasn't asked how Lee is doing in quite a while......

LOL!!!! I bet the guy who plays Verne Schillinger doesn't get invited over for family get togethers either, does he? ;) :teeth:

Well, at least Vern has redeemed himself by appearing on Law & Order as a psychologist working with investigators of sex crimes. He can now counsel all those people he has raped and tortured over the years while in prison. I think he is trying to outwit any karmic forces that may be at work......karma is a boomerang, after all!

NEAT-O!

I have been watching OZ since the beginning of the show! I think it is frighteningly realistic of harsh prison conditions, because my brother-in-law went to prison and he went through rather, turbulent, experiences...
