We recently got back from a Disney Cruise. My wife and I ate dinner at PALO one night...thought it would be fun and "sofistercated" to order a glass of wine with our meal...had the waitress recommend the wine.

Maybe it's just us, but wine does not really taste good....kind of like trying to swallow cough medicine. I would much rather have had a large glass of good ol' southern sweet tea.

What are we missing? :drinking1 :confused3

I like to drink wine, but I'm so clueless when it comes to being knowledgeable about it. I went to a wine tasting at a vineyard in Williamsburg last year with some girlfriends, it was a stitch. We were trying to act like we knew what we were tasting, but I didn't have a clue! And please don't ask me to choose a wine to go with a meal...:confused3

I think it is an aquired taste. I didn't used to like wine either, but a friend took me to a couple of wine tastings and started showing me how to really "taste" it, etc, and it grew on me. I now love wine.

And as far as the knowledge thing, "Wine for Dummies" is a very helpful book for helping you not make a fool of yourself at wine tastings. ;)

I'll have to pick that one up! It was a fun experience, but I felt like a moron...and I thought everyone else could probably tell!

For years I drank white wine, or rose. Now I would not touch that stuff!
I love Pinot Noir because it is a light red wine. I also drink Cabernet Savignon, and you have to spend $12-20 a bottle to get one thta is good.

I didn't like any alcohol for years. I agree it's an acquired taste. When I first started drinking wine, I'd only drank White Zinfadel or Riesling....really sweet and fruit stuff. My tastes have changed and now I really enjoy dry red wines with my dinners out or a special occassion. I love chianti!

Now beer OTOH...I just don't get. :confused3 That tastes awful to me...unless it's in a cheese based soup.

I don't like wine either. I'm more of a wine cooler or fruity tropical drink person. I just don't get how people can drink something that tastes so... un-good. My DB's girlfriend brought some red wine to Christmas dinner and I felt like I had to try it, just to be polite. It was like drinking watered down vinegar. Yuck!

If it tasted like vinegar, you had some "bad" wine that air had gotten into, which can happen if the cork gets too dry. Probably everyone was just being polite!

I don't drink any alcohol at all. I just don't like the taste. Trust me, I've tried. I couldn't wait to be old enough to order some fun fruity yummy alcoholic drink. They look so good. Imagine my surprise when I actually tasted it. YUCK! I like the way they look though, especially the ones with little umbrellas in them. So cute. I should order them just so I can sit there and look at it. :goodvibes
Anyways, needless to say we don't drink wine either.

I love a good wine. I agree, it's an aquired taste. Many years ago I dated a guy who was in training to be a sommolier. While I certainly do'nt have that type of knowledge, some of it rubbed off, and I was fortunate to be able to sample a huge variety of wines and learn about them.

I also agree that most start with the sicky sweets, and progress downward. I'm still more fond of white than red, but it's no longer a lack of a "sophisiticated palette", it's a preference. Under the right circumstances I can certainly enjoy a classic red.

I've always had the feeling that some people (no one here of course!) pretend to like it because they want to appear sophisticated. Same with caviar; I mean, just look at that stuff! The first time it was ever eaten had to be on a dare! And raw oysters - don't even get me started...
Give me a margarita with some chips and salsa anyday!

The BIL makes his own wine~in his bath tub. He has visions of becoming a famous...winemaker :confused3 I have visions of people drinking it and dropping like flies. He is always giving some of his "wine" to the DH, who I tell not to give away in fear of a lawsuit. :confused3

All the red wine I've ever tried has tasted like that (couldn't all be "bad"). I guess it doesn't actually taste like vinegar. That's just the closest thing I could think of to describe it. I wouldn't turn down a glass of Asti Spumanti though. I think for people who don't like wine, but want to try it, they should start with something sweet and fruity.

I think all wine taste like vinegar. Have tried many times but just don't like the taste. Now my DIL thinks she is a connoisseur, I wanted to explain to her that just because you have more than 2 bottles at the same time and some of them have corks, it doesn't make you a connoisseur.

I used to like wine, but since it can be a big migraine trigger I don't drink it now and it doesn't even sound good.

You are definately right about starting off with something sweet and fruity. Most people start with whites and roses for that reason.

Agreed. Most people I know started off drinking rose wines and very sweet white wines.

Hey - fellow Pensacolian here. If you're ever going through Defuniak, stop off at the Chautauqua Winery. It's right on the interstate. I'm not a big wine person either, but theirs is really good. It's made from scuppernong grapes - very sweet. They'll even give you a tour of the winery if you're interested. And they have several to try before you purchase any. My friend jokes that it's grape juice with a kick. :teeth:

I agree, it all tastes like medicine. On the other hand, sweet tea is not an acquired taste and I drink a lot of it. At 49,anything that I have to "learn to like" is not something high on my list of "musts". Life is too short; I can live without wine.
