Anyone else have problems with getting child to do homework??

You know the funny thing about all this is do you remember being so upset about homework when you were little? I just did it, no crying or throwing a fit. Maybe I was too afraid of my mom :rotfl:

I honestly don't remember having the loads of homework that my kids bring home. I don't think I even had homework until I got into highschool..(and no I'm not THAT old).

I had the battle with DS10 last night. He had a math paper he had to redo. He's supposed to read 20 minutes+ every night, and spelling, and whatever math he brings home. It can easily be a couple of hours a night. I guess I just don't get it. Why do they have my kids from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. if we still have to do 2 hours of homework every night for 5th grade... :confused3

I didn't have homework until Jr High (7th grade). Our kids have been bringing homework home since 1st grade. That homework was minimal but what I did like about it was that it got them in the habit of doing their homework. It would take 10 minutes, max plus any reading but it was about right then. The other thing to keep in mind is that your 2 hours of homework might take someone else 1/2 hour and someone else 4 hours. I know DS11 takes longer to do his homework then DD11 but he is more conscientious about checking his answers, etc. His GPA is about .01% higher then hers but they are both A students. DS14 takes FOREVER to get his homework done most days but it is really only about an hour of work. Each kid is different.

Thanks for the replies - not that I am happy that some of you are also having problems, but at least I am not alone! :)

It is monday now and ds is actually home from school.. He has had BAD allergies and was up last night sneezing and blowing...this morning he looked horrible, his head & throat hurt. I hate keeping him home this early in the school year, but I know that he would have spent the day in the nurses ofice and not get anything done. He has taken some meds (he also takes meds for the aspergers) and now is in his room resting - no gameboy, no tv, no gamecube, etc. He has the info for his project here at home and has PROMISED me that he would get it done today - we shall see.

DH is home with a stomach bug/cold and will spend the day on the couch. DD7 (2nd grade) fought me, like every day, to get off to school. Homework starts for her tonight and I am not sure how it will go. I went to her teacher the 4th day of school to find out why I was having trouble getting her off to school every morning - teacher says she is doing great, adjusting well, etc. So I am not falling for her games..but lots of stress for her with the changes of 2nd grade - they go upstairs now, more rules, stricter, more work, etc. She is very sensitive.

ANYHOW......I am close to 47 and I honestly don't remember having as much homework as the kids do these days. My kids are in a decent public school and my son is not in honors classes. I have heard of kids with 3 - 4+ hours of work EVERY night (including weekends) and lots of projects! I remember having book reports and maybe a project or two, but nothing like this! I was the last of 4 kids and I don't remember my parents EVER helping me with my work - and it's not a memory lapse as they don't remember either.

Blah.....when are we going back to Disney???? :)

I didn't get much help from my parents either. Sometimes I would ask my dad for some help with Chemistry but that was it. It sounds like your kids' school equates a lot of homework with a better education, which isn't really true.

I had one who almost always got in done in school, two who reluctantly do it and one who lies his head off trying to get OUT of doing it. I just chain him to the furnace and beat him until he complies. (Joke.)

Since I have yet to change any of their personalities, and can't seem to get my lazy-**** son whipped into shape, I can't help.

I do math with them, and help explain biology crap...but I don't do much of anything else except get them the reference books and sites they need.

I never did any of that art stuff or Make a Book about Me stuff once they were out of 1st grade.

But :grouphug: to you, OP.

We have a rule about no tv, PS2 or computer on school days. This has helped tremendously with homework. Our children start on homework right when they get home while having a snack.

My DS12 is in 6th grade and his homework and study time has been taking around 3 hours. He is LD and it just takes him longer. Knowing that he has nothing to look forward to (PS2), he is much more compliant about doing his work. Before he wanted to rush, rush, hurry, hurry to get done. We're starting week 3 of school and I'm hoping we can cut his homework time in half.

My DH asked me what was he learning all day at school, if he has 3 hours of work at night. :confused3 The amount of homework and projects is getting ridiculous.

Yes, we're having homework issues with DS11. Last two years we were in a school district that honestly, didn't challenge him. It was a cake-walk for him with very little homework. Due to a job change, we moved this year and this district is definitely tougher with more challenges, more homework, and more overall responsibilites. On top of it, the school day starts and ends later - he doesn't get home until 4:30. Due to after school activities of our other two kids, we're eating dinner later and finishing up homework well into the evening. He's struggling to adjust. He has to learn to use his planner better since this school is more intense in the homework. He can't rely on his memory anymore.

I'm glad to hear we're not the only ones.

I agree.. They are in school all day to learn and do work. I think SOME home work is necessary but not the excessive amounts that seem to be given now a days.

I am 36 - I had SOME homework sent home as a child but not very much. When school was done - school was done unless it was some special project or a book report.

I have a 3rd gr. Aspie. We agree, together , what time he wants to do his homework. Of, course it has to blend with my time too. And, it has to be at a time where there will be enough time to finish-not at like 8. He doesn't get upset if he can pick the time. Or I'll give him a choice between 2 times and he picks which one. Another solution I've seen with "our" kids is you make a pact with the teach to do x amount of timed work. Whatever gets done in that time frame, they turn in. But, then you have to be around to oversee that the kids not watching the walls. Ever since he was little I 've tried to stress that he needs to do the work, period. I know it's difficult and the tantrums are crazy, but I doubt the world is going to bend to them so take it in pieces. Good luck.
