Anyone else have a hard time finding good food in DHS?

If we have to eat at DHS, we like 50s - I wish all the wait staff was more into their "role" though, maybe we just haven't had much luck.

We also love Pizza Planet - I know I'm in the minority but this is our CS of choice at DHS. The pizza is just that, pizza, nothing fancy but it satisfies the need for food. I wish they would bring back the mixed greens salad instead of the tiny ceasar that they now use for the combo but that's my only complaint.

I really like Brown Derby but it's pretty expensive. We don't go to 50's Prime Time Cafe because my mother is scared she'll have to sing (once when we went, some lady didn't eat her veggies and had to sing "I'm a little teapot" in front of the restaurant). Generally we try to do counter service here, but haven't found a must-do option among those either (as opposed to AK where we *love* the Flame Tree BBQ).

Hollywood Brown Derby is delicious and had the best ahi tuna dish I have EVER had in my life! If you are willing to splurge on a signature restaurant...

Sadly, the ahi was removed from the menu at least a year ago. The new fish entree is nice but not as good as that ahi.

I think a lot depends on what you like to eat. We have pretty varied pallets and can enjoy gourmet food right down to simple american home cooking. Because of this, we find it pretty easy to eat TS at DHS assuming we can get an ADR. CS isn't the easiest but we never have trouble with TS. We've been happy with our meals at 50s PTC and Sci-Fi each time we've eaten at these restaurants and HBD was delicious though SLOW when we ate there. One of these years I'd like to give MM a try. H&V was barely mediocre and since my kids are too old for those characters we won't be back there.

Everytime we are there we look and look but cannot seem to find anything appealing and I'm talking counter service and sit down. It just all seems so so and we end up leaving the park and eating at the resorts or DTD.

Anyone else have this experience? If not, what is your absolute must foodwise in DHS? People write about their favorites in the World but no one seems to have an every trip must do in DHS.

What's going on over there?

Jennie

I would have to agree with you. DHS is my favorite park, but we can never find anything good to eat there. We are trying out Starring Rolls this next trip, but have skipped all TS restaurants. We used to book Brown Derby every trip, but they don't have anything appealing on the menu this time so we're skipping it.

I suggest something at Boardwalk, Beach Club, or Yacht Club. Even something in the Epcot World Showcase works out. That is what I ended up planning on our DHS nights. You just can't go wrong with free transportation & park hoppers :thumbsup2

We loved going to Brown Derby every trip for lunch until they A) raised the prices and then B) made the lunch menu (and prices) the same same as the dinner menu. Used to be able to get the Tuna Cobb for around 18 bucks or the Grouper for about 20 bucks and wash it down with a martini or the Unibroue/Tucher beers they carried. Haven't been back ever since lunch = dinner (I'm not spending $100+ for two people for lunch).

We've had good food at DHS many times. We've eaten at Mama Melrose 6 or 7 times and always been pleased. Also, Starring Roles for lunch has 2 pretty darn good sandwich choices and Backlot Express has a couple of fairly good options. It's not gourmet, but it is a theme park after all.....:rolleyes1

Even though I've heard mainly negative reviews, Mama Melrose had a pretty good chicken parmigan. And the mussel appetizer was good, but I don't eat mussels often so I don't have anything to compare it with really, lol.

Hmm...While we usually go to Sci-Fi or 50's, (we always enjoy both), we have also had pretty good sandwiches at starring rolls cafe .

When it comes to Table Service Restaurants I have been to 50's Prime Time Cafe and Brown Derby. I think both locations are very good and I always like going back to 50's Prime Time Cafe.

As for their Quick Service locations I personally think ABC Commissary and Backlot Express are very good and never had bad meals at either one, so I am not sure why others don't like them.

I love Brown Derby. DH and I like to go for lunch and each get an app (I love the tuna), split a cobb salad and maybe dessert. I really like Mama Melrose and it is much better than chain Italian except maybe Carrabba's. I love going there when it is cooler and then seeing Osbore Lights. We really liked the buffet at H&V before it was characters. Sci Fi and 50's Prime time are fun and decent food and the quick service at DHS is pretty good.

I read this a lot on here, & I'm always puzzled. Hollywood Brown Derby is better than any restaurant in any of the parks. (Disclaimer: Le Bistro could be better. We haven't tried it yet, so I can't speak for that.) We have tried most of the others & there's no comparison. HBD holds it's own with the other signatures, as well. What people should be saying is, "if you're looking for the best in-park restaurant, leave the other parks & go to DHS to eat at HBD." ;) As far as cost, it is 2 credits on DDP, so I can see how that would be a turn-off. (We've never used DDP, but I would use 2 credits here as quickly as I would the other signatures.) If paying OOP, the few dollars more you pay are money well spent.

I have to agree with you the food options at DHS are limited.
Brown Derby is good but expensive.
For CS we usually do the sandwiches at Starring Rolls and for sit down our Fave is Mama Melrose. The menu there as been reduced from what it used to be though.

Yep, very limited options at DHS. I've eaten at 50s and it's kind of fun, I've been to Sci Fi and it's a fun setting, Brown Derby can be good (have had bad experience there too) but if I want counter service...I usually take a friendship boat over to World Showcase...many more choices. Don't know why they can't get it together for DHS.

I don't get the flak DHS gets for food at all. The table service option at DHS are WORLDS better than those at the Magic Kingdom. And why doesn't anybody complain about the food at Animal Kingdom? The table service options are few and they have even worse counter service choices than DHS. I don't see where this whole "DHS has awful food" thing started.

I wonder if the "powers that be" at WDW are looking into changing dining at HS? I was asked to take a survery there last month regarding food quality in the park, it just makes me wonder if they are looking to make some changes.

We ate a snack (cupcakes) at Starring Rolls & lunch at the ABC Comissary. We were on the regular dining plan & wanted a CS with A/C since it was so hot while we were there. We put up with the less than stellar food at the ABC Com. because of the air.

ABC Commissary is often referred to as one of the worst CS in WDW - if you've got the worst, does no one ever notice the other options? Of course most of the CS available at DHS is typical American fast food which Disney doesn't often do all that well. They don't have something different like the CHH at MK or the ethnic offerings at Epcot.

Nope, Brown Derby is SO GOOD. It has great food & service. We love going there. Sci Fi is fun for a burger and the experience too.

My "Go To" for food at DHS are -

Counter Service - Backlot Express (I seem to be in a minority but I really like this for a quick lunch at the park)
Table Service - 50's Prime Time Cafe. Enjoyed both the lunch and dinner I had here

I have also eaten at Sci-Fi Drive in - not horrid but was not too memorable to me either. I'd only eat here again if I was with someone who really wanted to eat here. Much rather go to 50's

I agree, Backlot Express isn't bad. I had a burger there, and it was pretty good. I mean its a basic burger, but it tasted better than something from McD's.
