Anyone else given up?

I feel really bad for my kids 16 and 17. I didn’t know our cruise last Feb was going to be my sons last time in the teen club on a ship. I’m hoping my 16 year old will get to cruise again before his 18th birthday. What a strange time to be a teen with so much uncertainty about the future.

On a positive note we’ve gone on two week long trips to WDW during the pandemic so at least we have that. We’ve also got a new puppy which is keeping the kids busy and has sworn them off from ever having kids. Ha.

At times I feel like I’m watching a movie “like this really isn’t happening”. The more I detach myself the less angry I get about everything. It makes it easier to cope.

We have also detached and try to focus on the positive. Unfortunately every once and a while reality seeps through. We also have a 17 year old who will never go to the DCL teen club again (a 13 and 11 year old too). So sad. For older teens especially, it is like life has speed up for them and they have missed a part of growing up. Disney is one of the things that kept us sane and we too have been to Disney (Wdw, HH, Vero) this last year starting as soon as they reopened. I recommend as much Disney as possible. Lol. The puppy is a great idea. :lovestruc

As far as the puppy goes I feel like a just gave birth to a toddler. They say a puppy will prepare you for kids or swear off kids for ever...ain’t that the truth. I could see a lot of young couples not wanting to bring kids into this world we’re living in now.

Disney World has been great, but I really hope I’m not replacing my next trip with WDW again.

We just got a puppy too! Our dog of 15 1/2 years died in July and we had thought we would never get another one. But, lo and behold, we decided we needed another one!

I know what you mean about some people having second thoughts about having kids in today's world.

We had hoped to have grandchildren, and to take them on DCL cruises, but we will have to see if people want to get back to those things.

My 16 year old is also sad that she will be aged out in May 2022 after her IB exams end. She will have missed out by a week or two and says she no longer wants to cruise. She loved, loved, loved the clubs. The18-20 group seems very hit and miss and is not the same from what I have heard. It would be nice if DCL gave this group a hang out room.

I'm going to cancel my October DCL reservation this week. I don't see how my Fall cruise can work with current quarantine measures, since Puerto Rico is technically US land, and we would be arriving to port there from foreign islands, would we have to quarantine or test negative there before flying elsewhere in the States? As lovely as 10 days in PR would be, I just don't have that kind of time off of work, especially in the Fall. If anything, I would rather fly directly to PR for a week-long break since I could just return to the mainland without going through immigration.

I'm giving our cruise one more chance. Original booking was August 2020 Alaska cruise. Rebooked to May 2021, which I cancelled due to not knowing what that cruise would even look like should it happen. We booked 8 nights at Disney World instead for early June 2021. When the 2022 Alaska cruises come out, I will rebook one last time. If that cruise doesn't happen, I am going to be $15,000 richer since I won't rebook again.

I plan on putting a deposit down on a 2022 Baltic cruise. I’m not sure if it will be on DCl or not. I’ll decide that when I see the prices.
If ships aren’t sailing by 2022. I think cruising is done. I don’t see how they can survive.

I am surprised they have made it this long. If we aren't sailing by summer, I will be shocked if we don't start seeing major lines close for good or consolidation of major lines (which would be bad for us consumers). The capital expense, plus labor (even if minimally staffed), is extremely high. You can only find cash resources for so long.

DCL has the overall Disney business to support it longer. But even there, there must be a point where the main company says the future revenue potential no longer justifies the current expense. Where that is, I have no idea.

I gave up on our summer 2021 cruise many months ago. It became pretty clear to me by last summer that our travel restrictions wouldn’t be easing in time for us to commit to an August cruise. Now I’m not even sure it will be sailing at all.

I’m just waiting for summer 2022 itineraries to come out so we can switch.

I predict over the next couple of years we are really going to see the economic impact of what’s happened and it’s not going to be pretty. I’m afraid 2020 may not look like such a bad year.

Economically, I'm sure '21 & maybe also '22 will be worse than '20. State budgets will start to feel the pinch of reduced sales & income tax revenue, federal relief money will dry up, and the stock market bubble could burst at any time.

It's not just the US it's going to be a global meltdown. I just hope it doesn't end in some kind of war. I try not to worry about it too much, but it's not easy. WDW has been a nice distraction.

I'm so glad we cruised over New Year's last year, as it looks like it will be a very long time before we cruise again. We originally had a cruise booked for this coming March, then we moved it way ahead to next December, but even next December isn't looking great now. The restart of cruising keeps getting pushed back and back and back, with more potential restrictions, and at this point my heart isn't in it anymore.

We've sailed 6 wonderful cruises with DCL, and sailed on every ship, too. For years it was an annual tradition for us to cruise, but at this point I'm looking into other vacation options for next December. A limited Disney cruise (all kinds of extra rules, cutbacks and limitations everywhere, like at WDW), just doesn't appeal at the price DCL charges, and I'm no longer optimistic that those limitations will be over by next December. For us DCL was about carefree fun and being pampered: doing whatever we wanted whenever we wanted to with no worries, room service, twice daily maid service, group games, etc. If that won't be the experience onboard, I won't be willing to pay the DCL premium.

I think I'm going to change sail dates to this April and just wait for it to be cancelled so we can get a refund (we're concierge, so can't cancel ourselves). I think we'll wait until this finally really ends and the Wish comes out, and we'll sail again then.

Anyone else reaching a similar conclusion?

It is a sad situation. I have too much cruise addiction in my blood so I will sail whenever it comes back with whatever the restrictions are and then make a decision about other future cruises.

In the meantime I need to go read the book "Who Moved My Cheese" again to cope.
