Will we even be able to drive!?

Anyone else leaving around 9/15

we are driving from PA, and I am concerned with getting gas in GA and NC... My husband keeps looking at the bad side of the situation saying there is going to be a shortage, and we will have to cancel.. I sure hope not :(

anyone else?

We are leaving on October 7th and my father (who we are leaving a wk before us, and we are meeting up with) told my mom that we should rethink our trip because of the cost of fuel. We have extra money in our budget that I was hoping would be "fun" money but if it has to go to gas, then we will manage..but I wanna go no matter what!!! :Pinkbounc Maybe im being a baby about it, but Ive planned long enough and talked to the kids about this trip that we would all be disappointed to have to postpone!

I live in SC and am right over the state line to NC. We are ok on gas. The gov. officials are saying that the pipelines to the area are working again. Not full capacity yet, but soon. They have been saying if we need gas, get it not to panic. The prices in this area have not gone over $3.29 a gallon for reg. I hope in 2 weeks it should be even better. You should be ok driving. Check the airlines though. A friend of mine was supposed to drive to Michigan this weekend for a wedding. She booked a flight yesterday for today for like $150 a person. Cheaper than driving!!! Good Luck!

The US did not barely just have enough gas before Katrina.
There is plenty of gas even now, just problems getting it to some areas and a bigger problem with people panicking trying to all fill up their cars at the same time.

The AP newswire, as reported by Yahoo, just released a story that some pipelines in the Gulf Coast are are starting to reopen.

You are quite right to be concerned about finding gas in the southern states, not to mention the cost of the fuel if you do find it. Right now, people in northern Missisissippi, Alabama, and Georgia are waiting in line for hours sometimes for gas if there is any...this info coming from family members in those areas. I know people in those areas are being asked not to drive if not neccessary and some offices are closed even so far from the disaster itself.

I send you pixie dust and I do hope all works for you....also major thoughts, prayers, and pixie dust to those on the coast who cannot even consider a vacation at a time like this. Good luck!

We leave next Saturday and we are still going. I have a problem with this whole "shortage" thing. Gas companies are going to do all they can to get gas to the pumps. Otherwise they lose money. Its not like the shortage of the 70's when we weren't getting oil from the middle East. That was based on politics and religious differences. I work nights on my way home for the past 2 nights (3am usually) all the gas stations had gas. I passed about 8 gas stations. Though prices do vary but the most expensive are always the most expensive any other time not just now. It hasn't gone up as much as I thought. I've still seen it for $2.79 with the highest being $2.99. I think the "shortage" is about getting gas before the price was supposed to jump 50 cents a gallon. Before Katrina we were paying $2.64 so it only rose about 15 cents. (I know still alot). I can understand a shortage in the affected areas from Katrina but I think we will be ok. Though everyone can do their share to conserve. We were going to rent an Explorer for the trip but have decided against it. In my car we can get to Disney on 3/4 tank of gas(gas tank holds about 11 gallons) so about 9 gallons. I know the Explorer I would be using twice as much.I want it to be April 2001 again. I paid $.99 a gallon (yep, 99 cents a gallon) at the Chevron across from Walmart on Osceola Parkway. I remember this because I called my mom to tell her how low the gas was up there.

Maybe all this will step up oil production in the Middle East and help reduce the price of gas (Why not Dream Big)

I wouldn't worry about gas shortage. I live in an Atlanta suburb. I refused to participate in the "rush" for gas. Gas prices are stabilizing at about 3.00-3.29 for regular. If you can afford that, then enjoy your trip. The pipelines are expected to be running at a higher capacity by the weekend. Also check before you leave, they may go down. (Yeah right)

I am at the point where I can't believe the things that are happening around me/in this country! From the gas prices inflating so quickly in the past year, to the war in Iraq, and the lack of response to the people in New Orleans. :guilty: :guilty: :guilty:

We are leaving in 3.5 hours and driving down from Indiana, so straight through the full state of GA. we can affoid the prices and couldn't/wouldn't get airlines, b/c we need the car while down there! we are prepared to wait in lines, but we'll be in GA durring the late night/evening and early morning hours so hopefully lines will be minimal. But we are expecting the worse, plan to fill up every time we see prices below $3 a gallon. drivng 2-5 miles off the interstates for find it a little cheeper. But aren't cancelling.

I am budgeted for $4.00 a gallon for gas....

And if it is between $4-$5 we will be ok....

As long as the gas is available, we will be driving.

I'm in SC and the word here is that the pipeline is back on and we have gas flowing. I know in my area (Augusta, GA), the problem was panic and not availabilty. People were filling up everything they had and caused the shortage we experienced. Most people here have a full tank and won't need to fill up til end of next week. Gas should be fine here.

Coming from MA October 1st so hopefully things will be some what better with gas pricing and vailability by then...I will keep watching the situation.

I am driving to WDW on monday. Not worried about gas being available. The panic seems to be over. :)

I'm in Ga. as well, no shortage here! Have a great time on your trip! :moped:

They just said on the news, pipelines are running, gas is coming from overseas and prices will be dropping. It will take a couple of weeks for prices to drop, but supply is not really the problem. By the time the OP goes, there shouldn't be any issue. The real problem has been a run on gas.

Please explain this to me because I don't understand.

My DH and I are flying down from JFK to MCO on Jet Blue. Although we used points for the airfare, if we used cash at the time (6weeks ago) the airfare was $69 pp 1 way ($280.00 for 2 round trip)I just filled up my gas tank last Friday and it cost more than 69.00 - and that was before prices went up.

With the price of gas and food and lodging for 1 night it would cost more than $280! With Magical Express, you don't need a car from the airport and you really don't need a car in WDW (in all our trips never needed a car).

I just don't understand how it makes any sense $$ wise to fly, both in time in money. I figured it would cost us over $500.00 in gas alone and 4 days(round trip) travel time. :earseek:

It sure didn't take a couple of weeks for prices to go up. :confused3

We are driving down leaving the 30th of September. I totally see your point on the price of airfare vs the price of travel down. We always fly to Tampa to see my parents, this is our first time driving. However, the only reason for the drive is we are incorporating at stop to see our friends in North Carolina on the way home and stay there.

Some people are more than a traveling party of 2 - we are 4 and multiply that cost X4 people (other parties are even larger) you are at 560.00 for flight (if you can get that price for airfare) Driving will be costing us - using the gas calculator on AAA today $232.00 round trip so it is a big savings even if we book a room at a Days Inn for 1 night at AAA discount rate at some is $55.00 still over $200.00 savings for us to drive vs. flying. We are not driving due to cost but other reasons as I'm sure is the case with aloth of drivers.

Yesterday I was totally panicking over the gas situation as we are leaving in less than 20 days and will need 4 tanks of gas to get there and back. I almost scared myself into buying last minute plane tickets. But now I feel better about the gas situation so I'm glad we are still driving.

(on a side note, my entire city only has super premium gas left, it cost me $20 for a 1/4 tank - ugh!)
