Anyone else afraid of hurricanes this summer?

I've read in three different news stories that a heavier than usual hurricane season is expected this summer. I'm worried about wasting money on a WDW trip that would be wasted!

Not worried...I've gone during hurricane season more times than I can count and we've been fine so far.

September is typically hurricaine season and we went 10 years in a row. We did have a lock down for 24 hr one year, Disney is so prepared for this and people from other areas were actually going to Disney as their "evacuation" plan.

Don't be afraid, rain and downpours can happen at anytime of year! Last year the end of May the set records for the amount of rain! :rolleyes1 Yes, that is when I went! If you are really worried about it buy the Vacation Insurance!

The 2 major storm forcasters are both predicting more storms than last year, but they are not predicting the same numbers. :confused3 Plus we are talking about the weather! I mean isn't Global Warming going on and yet there are areas that had record snows this winter!:rolleyes1

Didn't those same forecasters predict a ton of hurricanes last year, and there were practically none? I take those kind of predictions with a grain of salt.

Ha ha ha...I was there last year in May. Rained every single day I was there. Kind of a bummer, but what can you do? I really would like to go for my b-day on Sep 5th...glad to know Disney has plans for everything though.

I've never given a thought to the weather when planning a long range vacation. There's absolutely no way to know what will happen. Last time we were there in late OCTOBER, and a hurricane arrived on our last day!! We stayed high and dry locked down indoors, but it sure ruined our last day. But we got to meet some great folks milling around in limbo the same as we were.
This year we're going to drive from NJ to Key West in September! Hoping for the best, but will be prepared for the worst. If we're told to evacuate, we will.

Hurricanes can happen any year! I would just plan as usual, keep an eye on the weather while you're down there and otherwise relax. Orlando is well inland so a powerful, damaging hurricane isn't as likely. Tornadoes could spawn of course but that's another issue.

I have to admit that with the strange weather this winter I'm a bit worried about what the summer will bring. Our plan to make the best of what comes our way while we're in Disney during August.

I'm with you. We'll be in WDW Aug 11 - 25. We'd prefer the weather to be nice and sunny, but if not we'll still be having a great time.

We were there during Hurricane Charley and Disney did a wonderful job of handling everything.

I wouldn't worry, I think most of it is hype. I think that they say that just about every year, with the exception of last year. I will repeat the same thing that I tell everyone that says stay out of Florida because of hurricanes. I am 46.5 years old. I have never once been through a hurricane. Yes Florida has them but the whole state doesn't get it. And from what I understand, if you are going to be in a hurricane then WDW is the place to be.

We have done this, while Hurricane Ivan was pulverizing our house we were at Disney. :thumbsup2

I had to look and see where in Florida you live that you didn't get hit in 2004. LOL I think 90% of the state did get it that year!

I do worry but then again I live in south fla. every year I hold my breathe and see how it goes.. I do have a weird feeling that there might be something this season due to the wacky weather lately. we personally do not plan trips august or sept to either the keys or disney but thats just us..

Disney has a hurricane policy. I am not sure of the exact details but it covers you having to cancel because of one being predicted there or where you live.

We live about an hour inland and get pummeled pretty bad when a hurricane comes in on our coastline. But, you can't live your life worrying about it; there is just no way in the world to know that far ahead if it will be a problem.

You won't have to worry about it if you'll get trip insurance -- the price of the insurance is nominal compared to what you've paid for your trip!
