Anyone driving long distance with kids?

I have to disagree with the poster that said the DVD prevents communication with your kids. We have one in the car, and we all listen together to whatever DVD is in there. This morning while stuck in carpool we were all singing along with the Little Mermaid movie and laughing because I kept getting some of the words wrong. We still talk over the movie (like most females I know :rotfl: ) and many times we'll talk about the movie as we're watching it.

Additionally, we have wireless headphones that the girls will wear on the way down sometimes so my husband and I can have cherished 'adult' conversations, something that's every bit as important! And it's nice not being overheard by your six year old who later asks you what a brown noser is because she listened in on a grownup conversation!

So don't knock the DVD player, we think it's solid gold for road trips!

We are driving from St. Louis MO in Sept. We drove to TX earlier this summer. My kids are 5 and 8 and the DVD player was a miracle. We also packed washable markers and plenty of paper, books, music and small toys. We encouraged lots of naps too! Snacks are also a good distraction. I recommend ones that are easy to vacuum instead of those that you will have to wash off the car seats. They make small pillows out of foam or the ones that are filled with beans for their little heads. We also brought small blankets for when they slept to keep then comfy(and hopefully sleeping lonnger). Hope this helps!

We have never used a DVD player before now, but I look forward to it, hoping it will help keep my 2yo entertained. We always have alot of fun talking as a family while driving. I guarantee that having a DVD player won't change anything. I'm sure we'll be singing along to Blue, Dora, and whatever else we decide to bring along.
We also let everyone take their own pillow and blanket. Each of us has our own cheapie fleece blanket and brings a pillow. DH and I share mine depending on who's driving. Older DD's take CD players with headphones, a deck of cards, Mad Libs(that we all enjoy), teen magazines, books, etc. This year I'll also let DD2 take Color Wonder markers...she loves those.
I know I've posted already in this thread, but I want to reiterate that driving 19 hours or more with kids isn't paradise, but its more than doable and can be enjoyed. We even talked about flying if we could grab a great deal thru SW, but Dh decided he really likes the drive and I agree.

This October will be my 19th trip to WDW(took my first at age 9) and every single one has been a road trip. We used to live in north Arkansas when my kids were small and that trip was about 18 or 19 hrs. We used to leave at night so the kids would sleep and take turns driving. But then my dh would use his Priority Club points to get a free room about halfway(kids just wouldn't make it the whole way) :rotfl2:

But growing up we lived in Mississippi and that was a 12 hr drive and we did the whole way straight through. :moped: I was so joyful when my dh got transferred to GA and now we only have 8 hrs...much better!!

Whats funny is when I tell people we are driving and they say "Oh my gosh, thats such a long way!" I kind of giggle under my breath!!

I agree with all of you!! Driving's the way to go for our family!! We drive 22 hours one way, and I wouldn't trade it for the world!! There are ups and downs but lots of family bonding and getting to see our country is an added bonus! We stop halfway at a nice hotel with a pool and a great breakfast and we're ready to go the rest of the way. Can't wait, we are counting down the days!! :cheer2:

You can say that again!! My kids think its hilarious that I know all the words to my ds ( 2 yo) Playhouse Disney CD and all his Thomas the Tank Engine sing alongs! If you have a reaaallly long drive, there's no way you can escape "family time" all together...

Also, we have a little game we play too that's fun in anticipation of the trip. Its like the Alphabet game, but we do the "Disney" alphabet game. You know, A = Ariel, B= Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, etc. etc. Its gets em all pumped up :earboy2:

Please forgive if this topic has been beaten to death. I never have replied to threads, as I am new to the forum, and am taking time to learn for our upcoming trip. We are contemplating a drive from CT, and also worry about my lovely grandaughter, who will be four. I beg any one who may allow any member of their family to drive unrestricted to rethink this decision. My DS flew on a medical helicopter in CT for many years. Her team responded to an horrific accident in which an entire family was killed. The responders, (some were combat vets) were not able to shake the images of blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys strewn about the highway. Apparently the driver fell asleep on the road. We will never really know what happened. She has described terrible consequences of well meaning parents whose children were not belted in, even for short periosa of time. Just ask yourself the value of your family's well-being vssaving $100.00. PLease take your time, stop along the way, and enjoy a long awaited family vacation.

Nancy... You are right, seatbelts make it challenging, but it can be done and should.

we drove from WI last dec and we got an adjustable foot rest/table that slides under the carseat from One step ahead. It kept his feet from dangling, has a removable tray with cupholder for snacks or activities on the road, and also comes with a clamp for attaching the tray to a table and a spike for sticking the tray in the ground on a picnic. The tray was wonderful for those on-the-road meals and then was easily removed for naptime. It can be used with any booster type seat and is adjustable as the child grows.

We are driving down to our first EVER family trip to Disney. We have 3 children, DD9,DD7 & DS5. We have driven to Florida before from Ohio and don't have a problem with it. We have a conversion van so there is lots of room for everyone to spread out and enjoy the ride. DH gets us there in about 16 hours, we only get breaks when he stops for gas and then its 20 minutes and we're back in the van and ready to go. Noone seems to mind as we all want to get to our destination. We have a DVD player, cd's, plug in video games and good old fashion games of SLUG BUG. Can't wait to get to the World and put all the great tips to work that I've read about on these boards!!! :teeth:

I have this too and love it!

Okay, I have read all the replies and don't think I am repeating anyone. I will however, give you my kids backpack contents adn the "gift list" to give an idea of what we bring along the way.

We drive 28 hours from MN and have done this three times. Our fourth road trip to WDW is coming in Feb. We start out generally in the early evening (though this trip we will be leaving late afternoon as there is some sightseeing we want to fit in along the way.) So, DH has the whole day off of work and he gets up and has breakfast and such and this year he will be going to pick up the van we are renting adn then coming home and going back to bed. We then drive through the night. The first trip, we thought the kids would go to sleep and stay asleep most of the night. Well, they went to sleep at about 10:00 but then at like 2 a.m. after we stopped for gas, they were wide awake and little chatter boxes. It was quite funny, really and they were all happy so that was fine. They did sleep a bit the next day. So, by the next morning we are in Tennessee and stop for a break and breakfast. We have stopped at a rest stop and then gotten in the car for poptarts and we have stopped at a full restaurant. The poptarts are the way to go. They did not want to sit in a restaurant after sitting all night. It wasn't pretty! That day we drive until we hit So GA somewhere and people are a bit stir crazy. Get a hotel and sleep. Preferably with a free breakfast. Most we have ever spent for a hotel on the road is $68 and that was Friday of Thanksgiving weekend. Next mornign we are ideally about 7 to 8 hours from Disney.

On the way, we have never had a DVD player before but are probably borrowing one this trip. (our kids are 9, 5, and will be 4) Each child has a backpack with stuff in it to include a few snacks each day that they can eat when they are ready, a juice box (everyone can also have water and each have their own water bottle.) They always have a variety of activities some of our favorites being colored pencils and paper, magnet boards and tangrams, and mini etch a sketch. I trade out the contents and rotate stuff around when we stop for breaks so the three kids have a variety but I haev to bring less stuff overall.

Our big time busters are books on tape, new music CDs that Daddy makes by taking their favorite songs from various tapes or CDs and putting them into compilation CDs. I like that as it helps with the just as you are getting ready to smack one of the Wiggles, they go away and you get a few Veggie tales songs. Really, the variety makes allllll the difference! And we play guessing games in the car and the kids love that. (I am thinking of an animal.....) We also sing songs which my family did when we were on road trips too.

We stop pretty often at rest stops to run around and go potty. Everyone goes potty!!! This is a hard and fast rule in our car. No way no how are we stopping half an hour later because somebody claimed they didn't have to go! We avoid the gas stations for bathroom breaks once we get south of IL whenever humanly possible. I do't want to offend anyone, but they are just not the same down there as up here. Ucky. On our first full day of driving, we stop at lunch time and have a picnic that I have packed from the day before. I generally make pb&j sandwiches there jsut having brougt the bread and fixins with us. Then we have apples or grapes as they travel well and some chips or cookies. The kids love that part! The next day, lunch is at a fast food place as someone mentioned with playtime first and then food. There is also a point along 75 and I am thinking it is right after the FL border just beyond the first FL rest stop. The next exit has a McDs and we have stopped at the rest stop, played there and gone to the Broom and then driven through McDs and gotten lunch. (Might be the last GA rest stop--I am not sure.)

As for the stroller and seating arrangements, knowing my own little people, I would place the youngest in the back with the oldest adn the middle one in the middle row by herself. I know that would work best for my own kids as the middle one can fight with either side, but the oldest usually gives the youngest a break. The stroller I would not even bother bringing along. To me, the wasted space or dealing with a rooftop carrier is just not worth it. Go to www.abbf.com and rent one. They will have it at the luggage room of your hotel when you check in and you leave it there when you leave. I have rented a double front to back, a double side by side and a sit and stand from them in the past and always been totally happy. They have great customer service, are easy to work with and have great rental items. The extra space you will have in the car on the way down will be well worth the cost of the rental.

HAve fun and be safe!

Today at a local grocery store I spotted a thin rubbermaid cooler that would work great as a footrest for the kiddies.

My kids love those squshy pillows you can get at Wal-Mart or Target. They conform to their heads/bodies and work great in the car!

We will be driving down from Western PA in early December. We definately plan on stopping somewhere overnight. The kids have done fine on our usual 10 hour trips to the Outer Banks, however, we think that 16 hours (for us) is a little too much!

Have a great trip! :flower:

Julie, if you are renting a van there probably will be one included. We are going in late Sept. and are renting through Budget and a DVD player is included. I'm just hoping and praying that it has sto and go storage under the floor!! It's a Town & Country.

Well, yippee!! DSIL has offerred hers, but one that is already installed would be better and easier to see from both rows of seats I am thinking. I love Budget, but I was not finding one in this area. That Stow and Go seating would be a HUGE perk though. I will have to look harder. Thanks!

Okay, I just put two of those squishy pillows in the wash on gentle cycle and they EXPLODED! There are teeny tiny balls all over the inside of my washer, the dryer, on the next batch of clothes that went through, everything! They don't rinse away, they stick to EVERYTHING. It's a DISASTER!

I can't imagine the mess if one of them exploded in our car...

Those pillows are now totally verboten in our house pirate:

We have driven 6 times in the last 5 years. packing a van for a 15 hour trip took some practice, but we have it down to a science now. We usually break our trip up over two days, because sitting in those carseats can get uncomfortable. Usually, we will leave around 6 a.m. and drive a comfortable distance( from south jersey we drive into S. Carolina). With breaks and meals this is about 8 p.m. We get a room and let the kids swim and burn off some energy (everyones excited to be going). The next morning, we only have a 5 hour trip, and are in the parks just after lunch. Because we stay overnight, we pack a few essentials in a small overnight bag touse in the hotel on the road, instead of unpacking all of our suitcases. Our stroller and suitcases stay on the roof rack. The extra space to move in the van for kids and a cooler easily outweighs the extra gallon or two of wasted gas. Pillows, towels and snacks are a must(nothing too messy). A DVD player is a must is you want any peace at all as you drive. Keep in mind that it is a great time as you can bond as a family and have fun on the way. Good Luck

we are contemplating driving for our land/sea package in Jan. 06 from Rochester,NY. mapquest says about 21 hours. There will just be too many of us to think about flying-8 people-we are travelling with extended family and friends of family. Anything I should think about in planning our drive? we do have the dual DVD players in headrests-we will be taking 2 cars-I will be driving with my sisters bestfriend-18(she is also our babysitter),my 13yr.old DD,4 yr. old DS,and 1yr@ the time DS. DH will be driving with 17yr. old DS and his 16 yr. old friend. This is all new to me. Will we have to pay to park @ POFQ? We are also taking the 3 nite cruise-will we have to pay to park @ the port? Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated! This a great thread! Thanks,Angel

We just came back from a 17 day road trip from St. Thomas Ontario to Pompano Beach FL., to Sarasota FL To Disney and back to Ontario. We have a van. There was my husband, myself and boys 11, 13, and 14. We had a TV/DVD combo hooked-up with the PS2(my 14 year old son did this) with an inverter(I think) This was a life saver. WE also had an over night bag packed with a change of clothes, toiletries and bathing suits. We left a 4:30 in the morning and traveled iuntil 4:30pm. We made many little pit stops to go to the bathroom, stretch our lags and enjoy the scenery. On the way down we made sandwiches and stopped fora picnic lunch. We always stayed in a place with a pool--that was also a lifesaver. Not only did it refresh but it let the kids wear off some energy.

Was I shocked by gas prices in Canada yesterday when we got home!!--$1.39/litre. That is well over $4.00/gal US
Have a safe and happy trip.

we will drive up to 15 hours with the kids(ds4 and DD2), my son loves the car dd asks to have diaper changed frequently because she knows she will get out of her chair. I have seen that people recommend pillows which is what we do for DS. Also we save DVD's for when kids get really bored. Throw everything you can on top of the car, more room inside the better. Good Luck.
