Where do you stop on the way back? The last two years we have stayed in Petersburg, VA and both hotels were disgusting!!! I have vowed to reserve a place in advance this year and not try to find a hotel while we're on the road. Any help in this area is greatly appreciated. We usually leave Orlando around 7 am and drive for about 12 hours. No long stops, just bathroom breaks. Where do other people end up after the 1/2 way point?
Thanks,

This is our first year driving. Based on my AAA book, and advice from family, we are stopping on the way back in Chester, VA (not too far from Richmond I think). My Father in law always stays at a Marriott property when he travels, and says they are usually consistantly decent. So we are staying at the Fairfield by Marriott in Chester.

We are driving for the first time this year and plan to stop at Rocky Mount, NC. We also considered Roanoke Rapids, NC and Emporia, VA. The second day we are going to drive until we get home. Luckily we have 3 drivers since my teenager has been driving for over a year now. We'll let him drive on the quieter stretches of highway.

I am with you. We stayed in a dive a few years ago. I swore I would never allow myself or family to be that situation again. We drive from Maine. So we have three (give or take) hours over you. However, we have stayed the last three trips in Fredericksburg, VA. at the Wytestone Suites.

Rooms were always clean. They pool is in the lobby. Our kids would swim for a bit before bedtime -- after being in the car all day. The next morning my DH and I would eat (excellent breakfast) while the kids swam again, then while DH filled the car with gas, cleaned the windows (a little on the obsessive side). The kids would eat and change their clothes. I know it sounds like a lot of wasted time when you could be driving, but the whole morning was maybe a 1/2 hour. The next stop (sometimes a bathroom break) is usually Lunch. I highly recommend the Wytestone Suites.

good luck and I promise you it is not disgusting!!

Thanks for the info on Wytestone, I will definately look into it. Hey, I grew up in Windham, and my parents, grandparents and several cousins are still there. Are you close?

Yes, I lived in Windham for 3 years ('97-2000). We now live in Fryeburg.

we have done the trip many times from Hampton NH, and after trying a few different spots (Fayetteville & Rocky Mount/Gold Rock Exit 145 ), but we really like the Rocky Mount Exit 138 area. you go about a mile east on Route 64 off Exit 138, then there are many new hotels available (Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, Courtyard, and our favorite the Residence Inn). the Residence Inn has a cocktail hour with food, and drinks (wind and soda) until 7pm, and they have a breakfast in the morning. the rooms are big, clean, and you can stretch out after a long day of driving. also, the staff is always friendly & helpful. we leave Hampton around 5am, and usually pull into Rocky Mount by 6pm. From here, it usually takes another 10 hours or so to get to Disney.

hope this helps, and have a great trip.

We have stayed at a nice Best Western in Emporia Va. and at a Comfort Inn at the next Emporia exit. Also if your going thru in the winter, the Best Western at Kings Dominoin amusment park is priced very nicely when the park is closed.
