Not that I'm thinking about it (well I would love it), but can anyone give me an estimate on the cost to drive an RV to Orlando? I am travelling from RI and would rent a smaller of the RV's.

The kids would have an absolute ball, but I'm sure with their gas milage it would cost a fortune

Thanks!!

People on the camping board should be able to help you.

Also be aware that I think most if not all RV rentals also have a millage fee that could be like 32 cents per mile. So factor that into your budget.

Also are you planning on actually camping in it on the way down or at WDW? Otherwise it's going to be a pretty expensive ride just sitting in the parking lot.

And while it may be covenant to have a bathroom all the time, unless you plan on emptying the tanks, anything you put in those tanks stays with you until you return it.

We own a Class A RV and i'll confirm the cost of gas alone is a joke. We get about 7 mpg. (even on highways) and to fill our gas tank (if completely empty) can cost $200+ to fill each time around. You also need propane and gas for the generator (if you aren't staying at a campsite where you can plug in), Plus the cost of the rental fee if you are renting. We have our own and we still wouldn't drive it all the way to Florida (i'm not too far from you). Although it's a more comfortable ride, and extremely convenient to have the fridge & bathroom, it's just not worth it. You could rent a car for a whole week with what you would pay for in gas for the first fill up. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, just my honest opinion.

Just for fun, I looked online at our local rental place. A class C rental is $1400/week in summer. 100 miles/day free, 25 cents/mile after that. $3/hour for generator use. Just using WDW as a destination, that's 1600 miles RT. We'd get 700 miles free, so we'd have to pay $225 in miles. Using my gas formula above, we'd spend $640 in gas. Even without the generator, we're out $2265. That's airfare for all five of us!

I don't know RV's but when on the road don't you have to use the generator for the frig. Unless its a dual propane\electricity.

You are correct in your statement. If you can plug in you do not need to even touch the generator. On a typical nice day ( without plugging in) you could leave the windows open and only turn on the generator when you need to use electrical stuff (microwave, blow dryer, etc.) totally depends on your needs.

Would the electronics work off the engine? To me, part of the benefit would be letting the youngins watch TV/DVD/etc while driving.

Hi Sam, as far as mine and our family members motorhomes go, no they will not work off he engine. The motorhome would need to have an inverter or you would need to use the generator to my knowledge. The newer ones could possibly be different, it doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck!

But if the frig is only electric I'm assuming you have to run the generator, since you would need one big inverter to run a frig on 110 AC

Thanks for that math. I knew I had looked into renting an rv before (for a trip to NH) and I remember the mileage charge, guess when I was thinking Disney I got all crazed and forgot about that:rotfl:

Actually $2265 was less than I was thinking, but right now (or as of last week) I could get roundtrip for less than $1,000 thanks to JetBlue joining TF Green Airport.

So, unless I hit Powerball, there will be no driving an rv to Disney

I have personally never heard of an RV's fridge only being electric.

I averaged about 9 mpg and the fuel was $1046 round trip from Long Island.

We have owned 3 towable travel trailers. All three have had a gas/electric fridge. When set on auto, it runs on gas only when not plugged in.

I am unsure how a drivable RV works, but in our camper only basic lights and the slide out work on the battery.
